I have a WD elements 1tb usb only(micro usb) hdd that suddendly quit showing up in my computer. It shows in disk management as an unallocated drive that needs to be initialized. I have over 500gb of pictures and other files on the drive so I do not want to initialize it. It does not give the option to change the drive letter. I have tried numerous recovery softwares, changed the cord, uninstalled and reinstalled my usb drivers, all to no avail. I am unable to connect it directly into my desktop because the pcb is soldered to the hdd. Is there a way to bypass this by possibly soldering some temperary cables to enable connection to my desktop to retrieve files that way? Any help would be really appreciated as I live in a small town and there are no professional data recovery companies around.

If the drive is shown as not initialized, I doubt that connecting it directly will help. Try using the Testdisk program to recover the partitions.

And don't use an external drive as the only storage for files, better off using it as a backup or for file transfer. If using it for storage, back it up as well.

Thanks for replying, but I have tried Testdisk. It shows nothing, and I am not sure what to try after it runs the scans.

If it ran the Analyze option and it did not find any partitions, you have to try to get the drive out of the enclosure to see if maybe the enclosure electronics are bad. It's not just a regular drive connected to a converter inside the case? You'd have to contact WD to find out what to do with the drive if it's not, you don't want to be guessing how to connect cables to it.
