I just finished building my own pc and I can not seem to install an OS on it. My system specs are as follows..

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor
Motherboard: ASRock 970DE3/U3S3 ATX AM3+ Motherboard
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 7850 1GB Video Card
Wireless Network Adapter: Asus USB-N10 802.11b/g/n USB 2.0 Wi-Fi Adapter
Case: Rosewill REDBONE ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: Rosewill Hive 650W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply
Optical Drive: Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer

I am fairly certain that I have enerything wired correctly. I was able to open the BIOS menu and it did recognize my disk drive and hard drive. I have a windows 7 update disk, but i first had to install an earlier version. I have an XP disk, and when I put it in, it begins the instal, and then I get the BSOD with a message about checking the hard drive or removing any new drives. the stop messages are:

Technical information; ***STOP: 0X0000007B (0XF78D663C, 0XC0000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)

What should I do to try to troubleshoot the problem? I am not very experienced with building computers, so getting it together was a victory for me. :)

I don't know if this will work, but since it doesn't take very long, I'd try installing windows 7 clean from a usb, using the key with your upgrade edition.

Consider reading the informmation on the following link as to how to upgrade from XP to Windows 7.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/help/upgrading-from-windows-xp-to-windows-7

The STOP messaage, as with all error messages, is never really understood even by Microsoft techs who invented the messages hehehe however, it might refer to your option to UPGRADE rather than a NEW INSTALLATION in the dialog dropdown option list. You have to do a NEW INSTALLATION even though it is an upgrade.

All current datas will be erased during the initial format of the hdd.

I tried the DBAN, and no luck. I think it is trying to install xp. A blue screen comes up and on the bottom is a grey bar that lists what it is installing and when it gets to the step "windows is starting" I get the error screen. any suggestions?

Is your RAM dual channel if it is take on out and boot the computer if it works then 1 of your ram sticks are deffected if not try it with the other one and remember DBAN clears the harddrive as if it's a brand new one.

You can't boot from an upgrade Pc, you have to upgrade (new install) from the desktop, you get a dialog with options as soon as you insert the DVD upgrade disk.

You can't upgrade a blank hdd, it has to have an OS for the reasons just mentioned.
