From what I have read, placing a 700w PSU into a system that only requires around 500w will not hurt the system, as the PSU outputs enough voltage for the current hardware.

So my question is, is this true? If you put a larger watt PSU in a system that requires something less, will it be fine.

For general purposes of future upgrades and external components not yet thought off.

Solution
That is correct, your power supply will only output what is being used. It will not overpower your machine. If you use a larger power supply in your machine 700w and 500w is being used then you will get longer life span from the power supply as it is not being put under to much stress and if you want to add components later or use more power hungry hardware you will have room to do that.
