Hi folks, I'm new around here as a member. Signed up because I've read a lot of your opinions - lots of smart people on here.
I'm looking for opinions and guidance on my build ideas.
Let me start by saying that I don't know as much as a lot of you, but I do have a pretty solid foundation. I am a musician, not a computer professional.

What I've got as my idea is this:
•Corsair Obsidian 650d case
• Corsair 850AX (PSU)
• Intel i7 3770k (CPU)
• Noctua NH-D14 (CPU Cooling)
• GSkill Ares 1866 2x8GB (DDR3)
• 3x WD Black sata 6gb drives
(Possibly -1 +SSD for OS and applications)
• > graphics card TBD
I'm not going to be doing gaming. Maybe a little. My main thing is I don't want my system to lag in any area at any time. So, despite not gaming, I need enough power to make sure I'm always running with plenty of headroom.

• > Motherboard TBD
I have a few MBs I'm looking at. Please give your options here. This is where I think I need the most input.
I'm looking at -
- ASUS Z77 V Deluxe
- Gigabyte Z77X UDH
- Asrock Z77 Extreme 9

The draw back from the V Deluxe for me is that I'll have to add a firewire PCIe card because my audio interface is firewire.
The Gigabyte has (at least) a header for 1394. But, I've read a lot of bad things about Gigabyte.
The Asrock board also has 1394 but the BIOS and set up doesn't seem as friendly to a user of my degree - compared to the ASUS board.

I'm building as powerful a system I can under an 1155 chip and a Z77 board.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Ill be hovering around the $2k mark so I'm not too concerned with skipping out on any quality for $.

Thanks guys

If you're just doing music and videos, something like a 7750 is going to be plenty for you.

Other than that, I'm bloody impressed, you've got some good picks there.

...Now then, the two problems:

1) Why are you trying to waste so much money on the motherboard? Just go with an Extreme 6 - it's more than enough. :p

2) You don't have a SSD, but you have 3 drives? Is this for a RAID setup? If so, it's kinda weird... and you want an SSD - one large enough you can make a partition to use as a scratch disk.

3) Your power supply is WAYYYYYYY overkill. That'll power two monster graphics cards, a sound card, and your CPU, all overclocked to hell. You only need a 450 or 500w from a reliable company, at MOST - you could get by with a 400w, easy.

I'm not too keen on what's needed for a blazing system, and what's extra I guess. So I'm aiming high.

I'm looking at running a SSD for the OS and applications. The others are separate because I'll run samples from one, and write recording to the other.
My thinking is that when I'm tracking, having one playing back any sampled instruments while having the other handle the recording of the audio tracks, will make both drives perform unimpeded.

:p

Ok, for the motherboard, well... that's too much. Even for overclocking, you really don't want to spend more than about $160 usd, max, unless you're going for a world record using liquid helium. :p

As for the hard drives, that makes more sense, but a better option might be a single ssd for those uses - it'll be faster than individual hard drives anyways. (Because remember, just because a hard drive is on a 6GB/s connection, it's not able to feed or write anywhere close to that.)

Yeah I've got the audio interface under control. I've been doing it for years so I'm up in that. I'm running a MOTU 828MKii with a combined 28 inputs and 30 total outputs. Most good units are firewire. That's my problem with a MB that doesn't have it. I'm just reading so much good stuff about ASUS Z77v and conflicting views on the Asrock and Gigabyte boards. Any input on manufacture recommendations? I've got a decent system now, but its time to upgrade. I've had my existing system a few years and the new stuff I'm doing is bogging it down.

That... is a very sexy audio setup.

I've actually got fairly significant experience with all three brands, and I'll tell you this: I don't like gigabyte. Their BIOS is poorly laid out, it can have trouble saving settings, and their customer service is, well, not good.

Between AsRock and ASUS, well, look at it like this: Asus is the rolls-royce of the motherboard industry. You're paying a premium for the name, and a premium for something that's very solidly built. AsRock began as a subsidiary of ASUS, started to create better budget motherboards. They did it so well that they're now a competitor, and offer everything but the brand name.

If you want tunderbolt, go with the Z77 Extreme 6 / TB4 - you won't find better value.

Very helpful information. Much appreciated. I'm going to look a lot harder at the Asrock board. So, I've got it narrowed down a bit more. Now I just need to figure out graphics card.

Happy to help!

Like I said, if you aren't gaming, then a 7750 or 650 (or even a 640) will be enough for your needs.
