Hey guys! This is my first time ever building a rig (and also my first time posting on the forum) so I've spent the last couple of days going through what seems like a TON of info, and I've found it quite overwhelming. I thought I could do some research and choose the right parts but I seem to be in over my head. So, I'm asking you guys if you could help me out with some suggestions and maybe some explanations for your choices so I can learn a bit about building rigs.

Approximate Purchase Date: First-Second week of April.

Budget Range: I'm looking for two options - something in the $600 range and another for $1000 (anything in between is welcome)

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Mostly gaming. Other uses would be surfing the web, watching movies, doing some light work (word/excel). Nothing major other than the gaming (no video/photo/music editing)

Are you buying a monitor: No

Parts to Upgrade: This is my current rig. It's really outdated so I doubt I can re-use any of it.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 @ 2.33 Ghz
Mother: MSI 631TM-P21
Memory: Kingston 2048 mb DDR2 @ 400 Mhz
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS
Power supply: Blaze Pentium P4 Model P650W-6. Peak output 650W.
HDD: WD Sata II 160 gb

Do you need to buy OS: I'm currently using Win 7 Pro 32bits. From what I've read, I'd need to change to a 64bit setup if I want to use more than 4 GB ram. If anyone could explain this, and also explain if there's any downside on using a 64 bit OS I'd appreciate it.

Location: Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Parts Preferences: None

Overclocking: Maybe (Would need to learn more about it)

SLI or Crossfire: Yes / No / Maybe (I'm sorry but I don't know what this means)

Your Monitor Resolution: I'm currently set up at 1680x1050, but I don't know much about this, so I can't really tell if I should be aiming at another resolution.

Additional Comments: The games I'm looking at are Skyrimg, Diablo 3, Dragon Age (whenever they release the DA III) and the like.

Why Are You Upgrading: I thinks it's high time I upgraded it. Can't run any new games, and I think it's even too little ram to run Win 7 (I'm actually having a hard time loading multiple tabs at the same time)

Thanks in advance for all your help!

I'd look at something like this:

It gets you a much nicer resolution for gaming, and you can use your second monitor in extended mode when being productive.

@nyboy42 Thanks for the links, I'll be sure to get through them!

@DarkSable Thanks for the setup, is there anything else I should know about it?

@stickmansam You can try this site maybe:

Mercado Libre

Just use the search dialogue and you'll get an idea of the pricing, withouth needing to know any spanish. The prices are in pesos, you'd have to divide it by 8 to get the price in US dolars (just for reference)

Thanks again!

It looks like pricing for parts is roughly comperable to the US, then - I'm amazed!
In that case, I highly reccommend the build I linked. Only thing you should know is that the 7870XT might be hard to find - if you can't get one, I'd go up to a 7950, rather than down to a normal 7870, provided that you're playing at 1080p.

Yeah get the rig from darksable but don't worry too much about the ram brand
Get an B75 or H77 depending on which is cheaper
Case aim for one with usb 3 and made by NZXT/CoolerMaster/corsair
PSU get a good 550-650W from corsair/xfx/antec/seasonic

get a seagte or wd blue 64mb cache HDD, get the cheaper brand

I was with you right up till this last point - I've got experiences with both brands, and I can tell you that Seagates run hot and noisy - I will always recommend the cooler, quieter WD's with better warranty, especially since the difference is at most a couple dollars.
