Yes, they are backwards compatible. PCI 1 just doesn't have the dame bandwidth, i doubt it would be anything to noticeable in performance.

No differance, if its at-least a PCI-E x8 signaled x16 slot (even 1.0) should offer more than enough bandwidth.

Yes, i used a PCI-E 2.0 card in an old sempron board that was x16 PCI-E 1.0
