do I need a dedicated server computer?

I just built a new system (fx 6300 asus m5a97 r2.0 8gb ram) and was going to build a independent server out of recycled and new parts. But looking at my new motherboard features it has a built in raid feature. Price will be about the same. A bit cheaper to add to the new build but only about 80 bucks less. But I kinda like the idea of a dedicated server. .. server would be for media storage, household back up, possible hosting of a personal website.

I'm going to warn you - it takes a *LOT* of effort to properly setup a NAS server - more than you'd think. The server OS (MS Windows Home Server 2011) is a lot different to work with than your standard XP/7/8. My numerous attempts to setup such a build (I have multiple PCs, laptops, and tablets connected to my Wifi router) have been quite a challenge to learn how to properly setup such a server. I'd suggest doing a lot more research before going in should you decide to setup such a build.

The challenge in and of itself - say you have a server where you want remote access setup for software deployment, you have a printer or two, multiple hard drives for backups, and you want all your PCs and tablets connected to this server. Getting your PCs to recognize the server for remote access is a major hassle, and then say you want all your media stored on the central server. Getting WMP, iTunes, etc to recognize your central server can be a pain if you don't have the drives available to map to each system. That's step one. :lol:

I am running vista on all of my computers do you know if that will be yet another issue? Was planning to upgrade to 7 or 8 but have to plan around the cost. I still need about 400 bucks in parts to build my server/NAS box.... add an additional 300 + for exsisting software upgrades and this project will be pushed back a while.

*EDIT* I have all the computers linked through the home network already and can get anything from any computer as it is. But I am sure you assumed that already...

Yeah I don't think that will be a problem with Home Server 2011. Where I work we have a wide variety of systems and most of them run Windows 7. A small few run Windows XP and we have maybe one or two running Vista. But that shouldn't be a problem as long as you're not running, say, Ubuntu.

If you dont mind me asking what hardware are you running your server with? I have an old amd athlon 64 x2 and mobo I was going to use but I think I am going to scrap that idea and build a new htpc and use that set up to run the server. Htpc is a hp m9047c with an intel q6600 and asus mobo.. mainly because if I ran the athlon I would meed to buy more ddr2 memory and I have a hard time investing money in that old of a system. So I figure it may make more sense to build an amd apu htpc and use what I already have in the hp for the server, but is a 100ish watt cpu too much power/heat for server duty? I know the computing power is over kill but its what I have.. and are the WD Red hdd worth the extra money?

I don't really have a server setup right now. I have an old AMD build based around a 990FX and Phenom II X6 that I'm thinking of turning into a server but I haven't exactly put any effort into it.
