While I'm not new to PC gaming, I'm definitely a building virgin. I basically want to verify if the following parts are compatible, and fit into the case without any problems etc...

Case: AZZA Solano 1000
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811517004

GPU: GIGABYTE GV-R797OC-3GD HD Radeon 7970 3GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811517004

CPU + Mobo combo: Intel i5-3570k + GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UD4H LGA 1155 Intel Z77

Corrections and suggestions are more than welcome.

When choosing a psu the most reputable brands are Corsair/ Seasonic/ Antec/ XFX Anyone that is 8 plus certified. You should look into the Hyper 212 Evo cooler, is it cheaper and people have gotten pretty decent overclocks with it. And yes any optical drive will do.

Wow this is the fastest response I have ever gotten in a forum. Thanks. Yeah I wanted to check that those components are all compatible before moving forward.
Someone recommended the ZALMAN CNPS9700 CPU cooler:

As for the PSU, there's so many options and I have no idea which brand/model is good.

As for optical drive, I'll just get the most basic one. I don't need Blu-Ray for now.

That was actually the cpu cooler I had chosen first, but then someone told me that i wouldn't fit in the case, and recommended the other one.

The Hyper 212 is 160mm if I remember correctly and your case is 205mm wide so it should fit no problem. :)
