no picture, no menu display, has back lights, very thin blue line down right edge of screen, thin red line left edge of screen, has sound, and can change channels

Can you access menu on TV and see picture? Can you choose another source for input get normal "no signal" message? If so.. change video cable that connects you to your current setup.

If you can't, then your screen is dead.

No can't get menu display on screen only the 2 coloured lines as mentioned. have tried different input ie hdmi. the trouble started when, on switching on vertical coloured lines would cover screen, then after awhile would change to moving coloured squares, then after a lot of changing channels a brilliant picture would come on

If essential TV menu don't work, other inputs and cables show same result on screen it may be time to go to repair shop i'm affraid.
