Transfer Data across Drives

Hi all

I have a question on whether it is possible to transfer data such as games, programs and so on from one internal drive to another without re installing as there are lots of updates for my games and software that will most probably exceed my download limit and frustrate the hell out of my family.

I also plan on upgrading my Windows 32 to 64 bit, however I'm not sure if that will somehow compromise or ruin it.

Let me know if there are options available, if not then I'm not too worried, just as long as i know there is no other way.

Thanks for all the help.

I am assuming you are asking because you want to reinstall windows. There's no 100% answer here - some programs and games don't need to be reinstalled, and some do. You may easily be able to just move the folders to a separate hard drive, but once you reinstall windows, the registry settings for that software is not going to be there. And sometimes software can fix itself or it didn't use the registry in a critical way, and sometimes it doesn't work. I will sell I have good luck when migrating games but less so with programs.

Sometimes it gets complicated. I'm pretty savvy, and it's not something I would want to deal with if it were me. Maybe its worth upgrading your internet connection for a few days so that you can DL the patches and stuff.

Why are you trying to go to 64 bit? You may not even need to. It will complicate the process if you are trying to migrate

If you planned ya 1st setup, this is a a piece of cake:

1. Install OS to its own partition ....C:\ Now any OS changes leave everything else intact.
2. Set up Games, Programs and Data partitions....one more for everything (D:\) or as many as ya like.
3. Once ya wipe C:\ and install the new OS, all ya customizations and updates remain intact. Some games and programs are "self contained" and will work just fine. Others will need to be reinstalled so as to set registry entries.
4. Simply reinstall them over themselves which will make any registry entries and leave all the original files intact as install process will not overwrite any "newer files".

^ that works perfectly if he already had thought about this and didn't have windows installed on C with all teh games and programs there too. That is how you set up things when you've been through a few too many reinstalls of windows. (XP, looking at you baby)

I think OP wants to copy the programs folder over to a new hdd, and have it work after a windows reinstall to the original disk.
