I recently lost Aero in my Windows 7 Professional installation after plugging in a Q-Waves PC adapter that allows you to add an extra screen to your computer through a wireless USB connection.

When I plugged the USB device in, the drivers already installed started setting up the system for the extra screen over USB. The screen flash a couple of times and after 30 seconds or so, the screen was totally bank except for my mouse. The mouse updated very slowly and after about a minute, the fans whirred up like they do when you first start the computer and the BIOS screen flashed up. After it booted up again, Windows reported a hardware-based BSoD.

So far, I've tried these things to solve my problem:
Downloaded and run MS Fixit app to detect Aero problems. It said my HD 6850 wasn't capable of displaying Aero, whereas it had worked since I started using the card ~5 months ago.
Windows troubleshooter says nothing about what is wrong.
dxdiag says no issues at all.
Registry hack doesn't work with forcing Aero.
Restarting DWM service with elevated CMD just causes dwm.exe to crash instantly.
Completely removing all traces I can find of the Q-Waves and DisplayLink software that came with the wireless display package.
Reinstalling Radeon drivers.

Strangely, removing the card works. The onboard (crappy) graphics display Aero properly. But as a part-time gamer, I cannot live with onboard graphics at all.

I have tried installing the new drivers and software for the Q-Waves USB adapter, but it can't update the firmware on the PC adapter so it doesn't finish installing the software. I've tried hacking the program to force finish the installation, but I can't work out where the memory is that tells the program firmware has been updated. I sent a message to Q-Waves but it seems their website hasn't been updated since 2011 and I got no reply from their email. They have no forums onsite and only have a single page that has a couple of links for downloads and basic info.

This is really weird because Windows doesn't present a good argument anywhere as to why it can't display Aero. My card is definitely capable, and I can still play DX9+ games. WEI completes successfully with all the DX10 and 9 tests working. The Aero score is well over the required rating.

Can anybody suggest what is the issue with this? Sorry for the long post :/
