Cannabalising an old HP laptop for parts

Hi there, this is my first post so I hope I have done this right!

My old HP Pavilion DV600 laptop finally gave up the ghost on me the other day, and I decided to break it down into its constituent parts and see if I could use any of it.

I've got the DVD drive (DVR-K17B) which I would love to convert into an external DVD drive for my netbook, but I'm not quite sure which cable(s?) I need - after a bit of googling it looks like any old SATA-USB 2.0 would do, is that right? Or do I need an external power supply as well?

On a similar note, I've also got the laptop screen (HP Spare 446480-001), with the connector (top right of this image) still intact, and whilst this seems like more of a long shot, I was wondering how easy it would be to convert it into a second screen for my desktop computer? some sort of connector to HDMI/VGA/DVI + power adaptor?

I'm not too hung up on the screen so if its super complicated, or even impossible then oh well, but I'd really like to get the CD drive working again. Any thoughts?

Thanks in anticipation!

Josh

If the screen was working fine before the disassembly, I would say sell it on EBay, it is nearly impossible to reconfigure a laptop screen for use other than for the exact same model of laptop it came from. I would also sell the ram. The HDD is slow at 5400rpm but can be reused as data storage (I would advise against using an old HDD for backups) but a converter is needed if considering placing in a desktop. There are external hard drive enclosures that are USB connected, most come with any external power needed. There are also external enclosures for optical drives and enclosures that will allow it to fit in a standard 5.25" bay. If the CPU, GPU or wireless card can be removed, they can also be sold
Hope it helps

Thanks for your response that's great. Just to clarify though, any SATA to USB connector would allow my optical drive to function as an external dvd drive then? Even if I didn't get one with an enclosure, and just bought the cable?

The cable may not work, I'd need to see it. Laptop HDD's have their SATA power and data cables almost combined as opposed to a 'standard' HDD which have larger and dedicated connections for each so it's possible it simply won't fit. A correct one will have a power adapter also (at least the one's I am familiar with) or at least an additional USB connector (for the added power an HDD uses as opposed to what USB supplies) like this one http://www.amazon.com/Drive-Adapter-Cable-Silicon-Protective/dp/B003Z2NIH2 (even comes with a silicon 'case' for the drive) just as an example
