I am in the process of trying to add in a SSD drive that I bought. It is a Crucuial M4 512 GB. The drive I am using currently is a WD Black 2TB drive. I want to use the SSD as a boot drive and also to store applications while using my hard drive to store movies and music.

I didn't want to reinstall Windows and the such, so I'm using a 3TB WD External hard drive to store the data on while I copy part of the hard drive to the SSD as per what the below guide says.

http://lifehacker.com/5837543/how-to-migrate-to-a-solid+state-drive-without-reinstalling-windows

I tried copying my current drive to the external drive using EaseUS Partition Master, but it won't let me as the sector sizes are different for the drives. The current drive is 512kb while the external drive is 4096kb. Windows doesn't give me an option to format it to 512kb either. Furthermore, in the program, it lists my hard drive as having 4 different filesystems: NTFS, FAT32, Other, and Unallocated. Almost all the data is in NTFS though.

My question is how can I copy the contents of my old drive to this external hard drive. I can't find a way around this sector size issue.

If I do a complete clone of the HDD to the SSD how would I get the data files such as movies and music back to the HDD? Is it as simple as drag and drop? There are lots of problems I have with a fresh install. Mainly, I don't want to lose the AppData. If I wanted to keep that would it be as simple as keeping my media files where I just drag and drop them to my external HDD, then copy them back when I'm done the fresh install?

Thanks

Just copy all your personal files over to the 3TB drive. Go to WD site and download their acronis image software to use for cloaning your drive. I used that software when I upgraded from a 300GB raptor to a 600GB raptor...everything worked fine as the software will do all the work for you.
