Will an Intel P4 661 CPU run 32-bit Win XP, or is it strictly 64-bit OS compatible?

More about : 661 cpu run bit win

64 bit instruction set processors are also capable of running 32 bit softwares.

It will run 32 bit version without problem. 64bit CPU can run 64bit and any lower system.

Best regards :)

Wow, thanks guys! I didn't expect such a quick response! I got a couple of these CPUs cheap and wasn't sure since the 660 CPU specs list both 32 and 64-bit instruction set, but the 661 spec just lists 64-bit. Also, just for my piece of mind, there should be no reason a mobo that supports a 660 wouldn't also support the 661, right? The only difference I'm aware of is the TDP, correct?

It should, It is always best to check the motherboard makers website for cpu support lists.

To clear it up. Desktop 64 bit cpus support 32 bit fine, but when Intel first had some 64 bit server cpus(Itanium), EVERYTHING was 64 bit and to do 32 bit required some kind of slow emulation. AMD started the 32/64 bit cpu idea and it suck.

Great, thanks for the 64-bit clarification. As for this mobo's CPU support, the website lists the 660 (and all the Prescott CPUs) but not the Cedar Mills. I'm pretty sure this mobo predates the 661 CPUs. Well, regardless, we'll find out soon enough if it's compatible!

If i remember right, It was not a problem until the Core2 based cpus came out for LGA 775 that problems started to come up because you needed not just a compatible chipset, but also bios version AND newer power(they changes it for the newer lower power cpus) system.

Also, cedar mill was just a die shrink if I remember. Your chances look good.

Yep, as far as I can determine that's correct. CPU-world says the micro-architecture of the core is the same, just smaller; performance is the same, as well. And since it's the same 775 socket, it should all be good. Anyway, Nuke - and everyone else - I appreciate the help this evening. Should make this next little build go a little smoother. ; )
