Audio won't resume after pause/stop

Sometimes when I have multiple programs playing sound, if the audio from one stops, no sound will play until I close the program that is using it. Most commonly I notice this when playing StarCraft II while listening to music in WinAmp. If the playlist ends while no game sounds are being played, I can't play any audio until I close/restart SCII.

It has happened with firefox/winamp, chrome/windows media player, and just about every combination of programs. When this happens, I can't play any audio in any program. I just start closing programs, and when I close the right one, audio will start playing again.

It seems to only happen when more than one program is using sound, although one time I couldn't get any sound to play and I just restarted my computer. This may have been the same problem and it just happened while I was away, but it was a few months ago and the problem I'm having now just started in the last week or so. The problem doesn't seem to ever occur if ANY program is using sound, it's just when nothing is using it, and something else tries to play.

Another weird thing that may or may not be related, is that I can hear mouse movements over the sub, especially the scroll wheel. It will make a VERY slight click/thump sound when I scroll, and occasionally horizontal or vertical movement will cause a higher pitched whine.

I have an AsRock 770 Extreme 3 motherboard with integrated sound. Speakers are set up as 5.1 channel surround.

Thanks for any help,
Jason

I think I have this figured out. It's been 2 days now and I haven't had this problem since.

In "advanced" under "speaker properties", I unchecked the "allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" box.

As far as I know, this setting was not changed in about 2 years and caused no problems. There were no recently installed programs that might have changed this. I will update if this did not fix the problem, but I believe it did.
