Hi I'm putting together a cheap gaming PC with the following parts

Athlon ll x4 750k
8gb ddr3 Kingston 1600mhz 1.35v
Asus Ati 7850 1gb
Asrock fm2a85x extreme4m
Cooler master Evo 212
Sandisk 64gb ssd
Xfx 450w

I plan to game at a res of 1440x900 and hope to get med/high settings. I would also like to do overclocking hence the CPU cooler. How does the build look?

Thanks

get a hard drive instead of the SSD. windows will fill most of the SSD, and you'll have no space for games. the SSD will only help you in loading times, so no benefit for gaming. other than that, you're good.

I would get something like this

The CPU is faster than the Athlon due to the k10 arch is actually faster clock for clock than the piledriver/vishera. The piledriver will OC higher but only might match an OC phenom II

I've heard those things run a lot hotter and consume more power. And that motherboard is really cheap. will it even oc the 965 or what if i want to get an fx cpu later. Plus I am quite interested in Kaveri which is supposedly compatible with fm2.

I am interested in Kaveri as I hope to downsize my PC without a discrete gpu. Tbh I'm still not sure why id get a 965, if the pile diver can oc higher than why get a 965. I don't see any major reason to switch to it

the thing is a 3.8ghz phenom can beat a 3.8ghz piledriver and a full on piledriver (with l3 cache which the athlon lacks) needs to clock about 4.2ghz to match the 3.8ghz phenom

Here a 3.7ghz pii beats an 3.8ghz a10 5800k (turbo to 4.2ghz, so almost like an 4.2ghz piledriver athlon)

In brackets it says the 5800k is running at stock. And the performance difference seems marginal especially since I will not be gaming at 1080p. And it does consume more power. I don't think it's a bad CPU but if I can buy a 750k at a cheaper price which overclocks more and consumes less power then why get the old 965. The 750k has twice the l2 cache as the 965 too

The 965 has 6mb of L3 cache though
The brackets don't include turbo, pretty sure they let them turbo up
Power usage is neglible AFAIK

Whats the price on the 750k?

750k is £60 and phenom seems to be £80-90 as it is discontinued from maplins. L2 cache is faster than l3 cache. And I'm pretty sure the turbo means it can clock to 4.2 but it ha to be done manually

The turbo is automatic unless you disable. Most reviews leave it on unless they explicitly state it (some reviews do tests with cpu's all clocked the same to show IPC)

L2 is faster but L3 cache is unified and allows better sharing between cores and also reduces run to the system ram

If you look at the crysis 3 bench, the phenom IIx2 clocked the same as the athlon II x2 is about 8% faster and the only difference is L3 cache

Here is an p ii 965 for $72 including VAT

The 7850 will likely beat out any APU for at least the next generation (Kaveri) and probably the next one as well

I am not making any sense of this, does that mean the 965 is better than an fx6300 which turbos to 4.1ghz or even the fx8150 which turbos at 4.2 while the phenom is clocked at 3.80. Aria charge like 8 pounds for p&p so essentially £80.

Those CPU's have more cores/modules that will allow them to be even faster in games that will use more cores/threads

The phenom II is 4 cores 4 threads

In the end it's your choice. If you really want to go athlon, I won't stop you :p

The athlon 750k is 2 modules, 4 threads
