Hello,

Ive been skulking around the forums like crazy lately looking for answers why my gpu isnt performing like its supposed to be and I pretty much got the answer that my CPU is holding me back or bottlenecking.

But, im confused on how to determine what part is bottlenecking so maybe someone can shine some light on me. :) What is bottlenecking my system.

TL DR: Everyone says bottleneck is cpu but cpu is only at 70 percent tops while gaming and gpu hits 80 to 100 percent. Food for thought?

CPU usage:70 percent GPU usage:80 to 100 percent
Witcher 2: On average 30 to 40 frames

GPU: 7850 XFX OC: 1000mhz, 1250mhz (stock and overclock wields same performance)

Psu: corsair 600W

Ram:6gb

Thank you.

No worries. Does look to be the CPU to me, its not the greatest and might be a slight bottleneck. Weird that you are not getting 100% usage though, are you V-Synced at all? I recommend running ATIman Uninstaller and reinstalling 13.3 Betas.

hmm... a $80 CPU and a $230 GPU
I would say that your CPU is probably the bottleneck. Its a three year old part, that was mid range when it came out.
On the plus side, since you went with AMD, you can easily upgrade your CPU to something more powerful than what you have now w/o having to replace your motherboard.
Just because its not being pegged at %100 percent doesn't mean its not the culprit.
If your mobo only supports AM3 than you can def get AMD Phenom II X4 965
with its higher clock rate(not much, i know) more on board memory and ability to adjust the CPU multiplier you get allot of bang for your buck.

Ahh ok thank you all. My motherboard is a FOXCONN 2AB1 and so far I can tell i can't buy much of any decent CPUs using this motherboard sadly :(

after a quick google,
this site http://www.findlaptopdriver.com/foxconn-motherboard-2ab1-specs-12242010h37/
seems to indicate that any 95watt AM3 CPU will work on this board. Obviously before any upgrade, i would insure that you have the latest BIOS version available.

The fact that a 25% graphics OC doesn't change your performance means it's either CPU or an obsolete graphics card. Since the 7850 is most likely not obsolete that leaves CPU. Of course it's possible that you're only eyeballing performance. 25% of 30fps is only 7fps.

The main problem I have is massive drops from like 50 or 60 to 30/25 is extremely noticeable and annoying. So any frames would help.

Thank you for the response.

200 would have to be for both CPU and MOBO and possibly RAM. You're looking at a Core i3 3220 with a B75 and 8gb ram. Well, for Intel anyways.

My final price would be around 300 to 400 if I wait. ( Got a family to help out damn life. Lol)

Thank you very much for that suggestion.

3570K with Z77 and 8GB Ram would go for $350-400. Or you could get the 3470 and B75 for $60-80 cheaper.
It comes down to whether you want to overclock or not. But the important thing is both will not bottleneck the 7850.

It looks nothing like it if you type in foxconn 2ab1 in google the first mobo that pops up is mine.

Thank you very much for the reply.
