Hi, I am thinking about upgrading my components in my computer. I want to upgrade to the following:
ramage IV motherboard
i7 3730
12-16g RAM around the 1866Mhz or even the 2000Mhz type

Im not made of money so I thought i would not get the highest CPU and rather spend more on faster RAM and good motherboard (since my PSU and GPU are good enough as they are, as you will see below)

I currently have:
an older gigabyte motherboard (unsure what type, does not support xfire/SLI)
i have an i7 but its 3 years old (not sure which one)
6g RAM 1333Mhz i think
1000W PSU
ATI 7959 3G GPU
in a Antec 1200 case.

so my GPU and PSU and tower are good. But the rest are lagging behind.
If I get these upgrades do I have to get a new hard drive also? and will it all plug straight in (so to speak) or is it a bit more complicated than that.. (im more than likely going to get a shop to build it and ill buy the parts from the net)

Any good advice would be awesome (btw im only running single screen 24' )

Yes, Radeon HD 7950 a very good card

If a SSD is too expensive for you, try getting a SSHD from Seagate.

I would suggest getting a cheap Asus p8z77 motherboard with i5-3570k for now since LGA 1150 and Haswell will be coming out this year, supposedly.

You can keep your hard drive and buy a SSD. Just put what you use most onto your SSD ( or SSHD ).

I also agree with the Faster CPU bit too, so you may just want to look at maybe a SSD (if you don't have one) or upgrading the graphics card (if you're a gamer, or use graphic intensive programs); but I'll admit I've never heard of the graphics card you have.

Thanks for the replies.. sorry i should have read over what i typed. A few mistakes there. GPU is 7950 <-- this is still a great card right? I only really game on it. (i can still play all games maxed out, only just starting to lag a bit, but im guessing its due to my cpu and ram not keeping up?)
I was looking at spending around 1500 AUS for total upgrade.
I dont have an SSD now, im just running a 1T hard drive, nothing special i dont think speed wise. I wasnt going to buy an SSD (i know it would help though)
I was just going to get maybe a faster one but nothing too outrageous
What CPU would you recommend? Is it worth sticking with my choice of M/B and RAM? or am i wasting my time?
Also can I keep my current hard drive or will I need to replace it?

ah ok,, so if i just add a SSD or SSHD i should be good.. I feel like its lagging though, if i have an i7 now wouldnt i be down grading if i go to i5?
I would rather spend the money now (im impatient lol)

DDR4? wow didnt even know
I was thinking he intel 3930k processor?
maybe i should just wait till my system can no longer play maxed (im guessing towards the end of the year) Ill just do it then if all these new goodies are coming out. then it will last me another 3.5 years. I have had my current system for 3.5 years and only upgraded the GPU from the GTX 285 to my 7950 when they first came out.. so i think its done me good so far to only just starting to lag a little now :)

STOP THE BEST THING you can do to your system at this point if your not doing a entire rebuild is as add a fast ssd drive belive me this will make a lot of difference in the way your pc works for games or just dailey inns and outs if not sale everything on ebay and start over.

If you have the money go for i7-3770k. You can get the intel i7-3930k with a lga 2011 motherboard, then later upgrade to a LGA 2011 Ivy Bridge Extreme chip. But remember, LGA 1150, Haswell, and DDR4 are coming out.

Honestly i couldnt tell you what i have. But when I first built this one i was told to go for 6g RAM because the triple? would work better than a 8g RAM set up? at the time i had no idea and just said yea go for it.
Im thinking now ill go for SSD and later on ill upgrade to all the newer stuff thats coming out. That way ill have SSD and all the new gear, should be good for quite a while to come that way?
