Hi folks,

I'm looking to build a small home data network while I am reburbing the house.

I'm looking for the best location for the gigaport switch.

I was thinking about locating the switch in the loft and having the runs going down to each of the room.

I'm in Glasgow, Scotland and the winters can be bad, regular temps below zero.

Would a switch survive ok in the loft? or where would be the best place be?

Thanks

If your loft is insulated then it should be fine, just like the water pipes. If the pipes don't freeze then the temps don't get below freezing in the loft. If you are still concerned then mount it below the ceiling high in the main house and run cables into the loft and down to the rooms as you originally thought. My preference would be in the main part of the house anyway as I hate getting the ladder out to get to the loft.

Hi,

Temperature shouldn't be an issue - it doesn't get that cold in Glasgow and the switch will keep itself warm if it's on all the time anyway. What I would be a little worried about, though, is condensation. I know stuff in our loft gets quite wet at times and I wouldn't want to put something like an ethernet switch up there! If you don't have a dampness problem in your loft, you might be OK putting it there - it would certainly be more convenient for the cable drops.

Hi,

Thanks for your replies. I had not thought about the condensation issue. Things are pretty dry up there. I have a small cupboard I can put the switch in, but its used to store the hoover in, thought I it might bashed, hence I thought about the loft.

Thanks
