8pin EPS CPU connector versus 4+4 ATX/EPS CPU connector

My power supply (Thermaltake Toughpower Grand 1050W) has native and modular cables. Two of the three native cables are an 8 pin EPS 12v CPU, and a 4+4 pin ATX/EPS 12v CPU. Will I ever have to use both of these or is it one or the other depending on what motherboard you have? I have an Asus P8Z77-V Pro/Thunderbolt motherboard. I see a connector on it for the 8 pin cable but not for the 4+4 cable. Do some motherboards use the 4+4 instead?

Thanks faalin and Feldmarschall,
I guess I won't need the 4+4 cable for now.

sorry for necroing but does that mean you have to have a power supply with the 8 pin plus the 4+4 just to run the mobo or just you one slot or the other?

It depends on your CPU TDP. If you have a CPU that runs under 105W you can use only one 4 pin connector and it will run just fine.
