I am a complete novice and usually problem solve by using Google and How To, so if I use the wrong terms, please forgive me. I used a conversion pack to convert the IDE slot on the motherboard to a SATA and then connected a new SATA hard drive. I then installed Windows 7, booting from the hard drive, which loaded fine, except for the fact that it wouldn't let me put the product key in, because it is an upgrade disc (which I'd forgotten). I then installed XP by booting from the hard drive again. This worked and I loaded Windows 7, again. This time I put the product key in, it had appeared to load fine, but then said there were system registry issues and rolled back to XP. I tried another three or four times, booting from disc, or from My Computer (as per the instructions) until 4am this morning, using different variations, but each time it either rolled back to XP, or gave the blue screen of death and then rolled back. I got up this morning, searched again and didn't find anything which I thought applied to the problem I was having, so posted for help on this site. Since then, I've gone back and tried again. When it asked me which drive to install it to, giving the option of 125Gb which was where the XP previously was, it also gave me the option to combine the entire disc, so I went for that....rightly or wrongly - please tell me if I should partition again? Anyway, it has loaded! It's currently installing updates, so I'm hoping that it has solved the first problems.
Do you have any advice about the partitioning? I also use an external hard drive where I tend to save anything like pictures or music.
