AMD Phenom II 965 hitting 80c

This thing use to be in the low 50s and now has somehow worked its way up to 80! I have no idea why it's doing this. It only hits 80 when I'm gaming. I'm using Core Temp to read my CPU temperature. I've already tried taking off the heatsink, cleaning it, and reapplying arctic 5, etc. I am using this aftermarket cooler:

On an unrelated matter, I somehow bent a bunch of pins on my CPU getting that heatsink off. I was able to bend them back with a paperclip. The CPU works, surprisingly.

Anyway, is this CPU just getting old or something, or do I need to get a different cooler?

I have had this problem before. Im guessing, but either the reported temp is wrong or the shell is not making contact witht he die. You can ignore it, like I did and the processor is still running for me(core 2 duo/one side runs at 85c all the time) or you can shave the die(youtube this) and that will allow you get closer to the chip and provide better cooling. Just a note. You can brick the chip doing this. Good luck.

Chances are I'll ruin the chip if I try shaving it. Haha. Any other solutions? Is it normal for a temperature reader to be "broken" in such a way that it reads a crazy temperature? It read in the low 50s about a month or two ago. My computer does actually shut off sometimes.

Is the heatsink fan and all the other case fans working properly, video card fan, PSU fan, etc. Check to make sure they are spinning at full speed. Bearings/sleeves will go bad in time and slow fans considerably. Also, if the heat isn't getting vented out of the case, even with a properly mounted heatsink things can still get pretty warm.

All the fans are in working order. I did an experiment with this where I removed a side panel from my case on the opposite side of the motherboard and laid my case on it's side so the heat would rise out. It still hit 80c, unless I opened the window and let the room turn into a freezer, then it would stay in the 60s. For the record my case is a CM690.

I've done that twice with no temperature change. I'm beginning to consider buying an entirely new CPU/Motherboard with a liquid cooler.

What do you guys think of these:

You could have PMed me that and been a lot nicer, especially considering my problem is unresolved. I'm going to go to a different forum now.
