Hey

Seem to be having a problem with a custom PC which I built in January. The specification is as followed:

  • EVGA GeForce GTX 680 2048MB

    Gigabyte Z77X-UP5 TH Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard

    Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail

    Samsung 120GB SSD 840 SATA 6Gb/s Basic

Lian Li PC-A55A Aluminium Midi Tower Case - Silver

    Corsair Dominator PLATINUM 8GB

Corsair 2013 Edition Gamer Series GS 600W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply

    Toshiba (7K1000.D) 1TB SATA 6GB/s 32MB Cache - OEM (DT01ACA100) HDD

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2 CPU Cooler

The machine seems to have the issue where it will suddenly power down and refuse to turn back on without unplugging the machine from the mains. Which is very bizarre. The motherboard indicates power during this (LED indicator) however refuses to boot up until power is completely discharged.

I have had a little investigation into this myself and believe it may be something to do with the PSU? I don't believe the issue to be related to temperatures as both GPU and CPU seem to run relatively low.

The machine will shutdown inconsistently both during high process tasks (Gaming) and lengthy periods of time. Sometimes it doesn't happen at all and others it suddenly does.

Would appreciate any support/advice with getting this issue resolved. :)

It sounds like a motherboard or PSU problem. Does your PSU fan seem to be running ok? Unless you have a spare mobo or PSU sitting around you can use to test I would try RMA'ing both.

The PSU fan doesn't seem to run no. Seems to have the mind of its own powering on and off, makes a hell of a noise too. But I believe this is something to do with the PSU being 'economic' I have contacted Corsair and will hopefully hear something back soon.

But I guess it could be the motherboard? Ill give over-clockers a contact and see what they suggest, hopefully nothing too serious...

You said the PSU is making a hell of a noise? Did it always make that noise? Noises are usually indicative of problems, but the powering on and off is normal- most PSU's will only run fans when needed; so of its not hot it wont run (this saves energy.

Yes although it will only do this at times of powering up the fan. I had a look at the fan when it was doing this and it appears that the fan struggles to start up at and fights itself (creating a humming noise and back-forward motion), again something which is not consistent. Once the fan gets running however this goes away. My case mounts the PSU at the front of the machine and is placed in an irregular position, so I guess this could be the reason for the fan to 'struggle'?
