CPU fan not spinning after sleep

Hi Tom's,

I have an ASUS P7P55D PRO LGA1156 ATX Mobo with Intel Core i7 860 2.80GHz processor, 8 GB DDR3 RAM, EarthWatts 650W power supply all dating to 5/2010; and a newer EVGA GeForce GTX680 2048 MB video card I bought in June of 2012.

All is working well except occasionally, the CPU fan will not start spinning after sleep mode. This seems to happen mostly on cold mornings. I have Asus PC Probe II monitoring software installed which gives a warning when this happens.

Do I need: a new CPU fan? a new power supply? a BIOS upgrade? new monitoring software? to open the case, start the fan manually and ignore the whole thing?

Thanks.

You should check temperatures first. If smart fan is enabled then your fan will not spin until your CPU reaches certain temp. Also if CPU smart fan is enabled you should turn of FAN FAIL WARNING because it's conflict. Check your temps, i bet if you let your PC to run something for 30 seconds to start heating your fan will start. If temps reach 60 celzius without fan spining then you have problem.

Best regards. :)

Thanks Feldmarschall,

Ordinarily, when coming out of sleep mode, the CPU fan starts OK and I don't get any temperature warnings. Once in a while (about once a month) the warning sound comes on, the CPU temp shoots up over 75 degrees and the fan is not spinning. This lasts until I open the case and manually start the fan. Any idea as to what could cause this to happen intermittently?

It's possible that fan is damaged and can't handle voltage for start or your mobo header gives higher voltage than fan can accept. But i would go for first option, it's more probable since if it was two much voltage fan would probably skip phase and try to start and it would be like clicking moves.

You may want to buy new fan only for your cooler. If it's stock cooler it will be probably like 5-6$. It's not great money to loose if it is at the end mobo problem. Set your CPU warning a little lower until you get new fan or even new cooler (10$ stock intel). 65 celzius perhaps. No need to get 75-80 before you get temp warning.
