Hey TH commnity,

My HTPC's going on the fritz (Athlon II w/ GTX 550ti) which I think is because of the mobo finally dieing. So, it looks like I have an opportunity to upgrade.

I was wondering whether I should go for Trinity or LLano APU as a replacement. This HTPC will not be doing any gaming; it must be able to play 3D BD at 1080P (I use this rig with a 46" TV).

I should also add that I want to take that 550ti and use it in my main PC for gaming. I just got Bioshock: Infinite and I found that I cannot max it out, which came as a shock. So, I was thinking of taking the 550 and either use it as my main gpu, with the 460 I'm using now being used as a physx card, or vice versa. I game at 1050P (too broke to go 1600 :( )

Best to have more information than less information. The fact that Richland is coming out in May / June could be a factor in the OP's next HTPC build. If he's looking to immediately replace his current HTPC, then Trinity is the way to go. If he can wait just a little longer, then Richland becomes the more desirable option.

Kaveri? Too far out. But provided info so that the OP is aware what's beyond Richland.

First off, your 460 is faster than that 550ti. Most likely a new GPU will be needed to max it out, and possibly CPU as well depending on what your gaming rig has. I would go with Trinity instead of Llano. Trinity is a bit faster and Llano is a dead socket. FM2 of Trinity has a bit of life left yet in it.

I'd get a Celeron and a Radeon 6450. 6450 specifically mentions 3D 1080p bluray playback support and Celeron is more than powerful enough while using almost no power and cooling.

As for the two graphics cards, I'd sell both of those on ebay and use the proceeds to get a gtx 660 or Radeon 7850.

Trinity is the better option. In general, it is newer and more powerful (both CPU and integrated GPU). Llano is socket FM1 and FM1 is dead. Trinity is socket FM2 and so is Richland; Trinity's successor. Desktop Richland APUs will probably hit the market in May / June.

Richland will be succeeded by Kaveri in 2014, but information regarding sockets seems to be influx. I think the original speculation was that it was going to be socket FM2. Then rumors about it being socket FM3, but backwards compatible with socket FM2. Now some rumors about it being only sold soldered into motherboards.

Thanks for the info guys, I wasn't aware of Richland existing, let alone the release date being nigh upon us. Given this info, I'll probably wait to upgrade the HTPC. In the meantime, I guess i'll keep trying to troubleshoot the current rig and see if I cant find a more permanent fix to the problem. As for the G-cards, I really wanna try having a card dedicted for physx, so I guess i'll be using the 550 for physx and the 460 as my main.

I got 730 W out of my psu, so i'm coo. Interesting that the 460 isn't listed, because i have everything on ultra except dynamic shadows, which i've turned off (remember though that this is at 1680x1050). I got 16 GB of 1600 mHz and a i5-760, so overall i'm coo mang. Haha.
