I live in a 3 story house that is old, thick walls and it's hard for wifi to get from the 1st floor to the 3rd floor. Not a problem since I'm moving soon, but probably to another big, old house and when I move I want to set it up right so that I can be connected to the same wifi ssid no matter when I am in the house.

As it stands now, I have routers on each floor with different names and sometimes a phone or tablet will stay connected to a router 3 floors away with a 1mb/s signal instead of connecting to the one 3 feet from at 54mb and I'm sick of always having to try and switch and check, so I want 1 big wifi network for a big house.

Is using access points better to bridge from floor to floor or giant antenna's or whats the best way to do this.

A couple weeks ago Tom's did a review of some new routers, here http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/wi-fi-802.11ac-rout... , and I believe they were pretty shocked by the performance of one of them through walls, I cannot recall which at the moment and don't have time to search the whole article, but something like that may be an option, instead of using 1 base unit and an extender/repeater.

Also, play with the orientation of the antenna(s). Some units produce a donut shape signal, and a vertical donut might work better.

For now, I just redid the channels to 1-6-11 for the 3 routers so none are overlapping, and moved them a bit. I'd just like to know if there are repeaters you can plug into a LAN port on a router and have the same SSID or something like that. The house is wired to the hilt with ports everywhere, and the new house will be as well. Just with so many tablets and phones and laptops now in the house, it's a pain to have one of them hang on to dear life to a 3mb weak signal when it's next to a 54 or 104mb connection and you have to manually always check. I just want 1 big wifi network using whatever equipment I have to.
