Title says it all. I am building my first ever gaming rig, but I just don't know which to get! I hear that the 680 only gives you about 5 -10 FPS more.. so that might not be worth it. Here are my current specs that I am going to be buying for the rig soon:

CPU: i5 3570k
RAM: Corsair 8GB Vengeance
MOBO: MSI DDR3 1600 LGA
PSU: CX750W
HDD: WD Blue 1TB
COOLER: Hyper 212 EVO
CASE: Phantom 410

GPUs:

670FTW: http://amzn.to/10rov6n

670FTW+: http://amzn.to/YpQkPT

680: http://amzn.to/10roCid

thanks!

Go for a 2GB 670, the 680 just isn't worth the huge bump in price. Also seeing as you have an excellent case I'd argue it would be better to go with a cooler with radial rather than blower fans. The Asus DC2 offers the best cooling by a long shot, go for that.

The 680 is 5-10% faster overall, but alot priceyer. Just get the 670 and overclock it, thats not to say however that the 680 doesn't overclock, but the gap won't be that big. Also 4GB is not needed unless you are at a resolution greater than 1080p.

Edit- Like the guy above said don't forget AMD, the 7970 is the same price and considerably quicker. Though I wouldn't get a Gigabyte one as they are voltage locked.
Would you entertain other suggestions? I'd go for a Gigabyte 670 with three fans - much quieter and more headroom for overclocking. Getting a GPU with a blower-style cooler is my only regret on my current build.

Another option is the Gigabyte 3-fan 7970 for the same price - faster than the 670 and comes with Bioshock Infinite and Crysis 3 - if you don't want the games you can sell the codes on e-bay.

So how about something like this? http://amzn.to/13M9SCi

or even: http://amzn.to/179zmIw

Blower-style cooling solutions are made for stacked SLI and cases with poor airflow or space. So don't get such a GPU, when you buy such a mammoth of a case with proper airflow. Actually I've owned that case, and I wouldn't recommend it. Plastic cases just screams bad quality, and the case really is. A case like Fractal Design 4 is one of the most popular cases, and not without reason. Low acoustics, good air flow, lots of cooling options, fan controller, space for the longest GPUs, 7 PCI-E and NOT a complete plastic case.

So a GTX 670 with a cooling solution like the DC II by ASUS, 3x Windforce by Gigabyte or Twin Frozr III by MSI would be a better option for overclocking and lower temperatures.

DON'T get a GTX 680. Just look how well the GTX 670 DC II TOP by ASUS fares against it. It surprisingly performs better. So don't waste your money on a GTX 680.

Hmmm, okay thanks! So, is there a difference between the MSI and the Gigabyte 670s that I mentioned? Which one would you recommend?

Power edition by MSI! It has better overclocking potential and comes with a backplate, which is great for protecting the PCB, overclocking and lower temperatures.
