My Gateway GT 5656 does not always recognize my Glyph 500 GB external hard drive. I have to reboot with the hard drive on to deal with it. Here's what is strange: It did not have this problem when I used a Firewire 400 connection. But I recently added a Vantec PCI card, to give me an external SATA hookup, so my music files would load faster (they don't, at least not appreciably). That is when the problem started. I hate to waste the nice SATA card, for which I spent 50.00, with the cable. But then again, I'm not really seeing much benefit from it anyway. Is there a fix, or should I just go back to Firewire, and retire the SATA card?

While looking around on the forum, I came across "Disk Management." I got into this and found I could rescan the drives. My computer immediately recognized the external drive. So now at least I have a way to deal with it, without having to shut down the computer. Hopefully it will cause the problem to go away for good!

eSata should be twice as fast as FW800, at the very least, as fast as FW800 is

like ron says above, you need to have the Glyph turned on and connected before you boot the computer - I'm guessing it drops offline because the cable is getting bumped around...?
