You won't benefit from purchasing an X79 rig for a gaming system. Too much investment for almost no payoff in terms of performance gain. If it's future proofing you're going for - there really isn't such a thing (it's called "Moore's Law"). This is what I would suggest:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor (£166.79 @ Amazon UK)
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 65.0 CFM CPU Cooler (£55.82 @ Ebuyer)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H ATX LGA1155 Motherboard (£119.98 @ Dabs)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (£45.99 @ Amazon UK)

That's a better use of your budget. Gaming rigs - it's all about getting the best GPU you can get for your budget. Everything else comes second. In this case - dual 670s which come really close to matching the GTX 690 in terms of sheer performance. Plus the Gigabyte Windforce is the best air cooled GPU solution you can get right now.

I'll echo G-Unit's build as I dont think LGA 2011 is the way to go.....my minor edits would be

Phanteks Cooler ties or beats the Noctua thermally, is way more attract9ive aesthetically and has a 5 year warranty to the Noc's 1 year
http://www.vortez.net/articles_pages/phanteks_ph_tc14pe_cpu_cooler_review,14.html

I'd use 2 x 8GB of low profile Vengeance

Personally, Id use a 850 watter if oc'ing the twin GPUs and CPU.....something like the Corsair 500R and HX850

My personal preference would be an Asus Sabertooth and twin Asus DCII's ..... the Asus cards run faster and quieter in my experience.

You don't really need extra RAM on a gaming rig though - if you're going to spend that money I'd rather spend it on getting a bigger SSD or a larger mechanical HD.

I'm personally not a fan of the Asus Sabertooth because of the plastic armor.

I would second that on getting the Asus Z77 Sabertooth it is a very good board from my experience with it so far.

For gaming I feel a Z77 socket 1155 would be the best choose at this time. And the i5 3570K seems to be the sweet spot as far as intel gaming CPU's go right now.
As for GPU's I would get the Sapphire HD 7970 single or Crossfire witch ever way you want to go on that. I have a SLI GTX 670 setup on my i5 3570K rig and after using them for three months I really wish I had gone with the 7970's on this rig to. I did with my FX-8350 build but for some reason better sense failed me when I built my intel rig and went with Nvidia so far it has been a big mistake just to many problems with drivers and such that I did not have with any ATI card.

Thanks for all the answers... this will be my first attempt at building a computer myself, so im not sure if i should try and find somewhere like pc.co.uk or another place to build it but i just choose the components.

so, its either the SLI 670's or 7970.

if i could get an answer on this question it would be great :)
