Power Supply Problem?

Hi all, so I recently decided to begin overclocking my i5-3570k so I set the multiplier to 40x (4ghz) with no voltage increase but whenever I play games it seems to cause my display adapter to stop responding, it will however recover and windows will tell me that is has recovered successfully. So I set it to all 4 cores at 3.8ghz and it still seems to cause display adapter crashes. I was wondering if this could be caused by the PSU as after purchasing mine I discovered it is actually not good at all (I got a Cooler Master GX650). I run a 7970 @ 1000mhz (stock for my card) too.

Thanks in advance

Solution

A display adapter crash isn't going to come from a CPU overclock - it's going to come from unstable drivers. (It just crashed the game out to windows, as opposed to crashing the computer, right?)

I'd write it off as 'one of those things' for now, and only start investigating if it happens again.

No, this problem is non-existent when running everything at stock. You think I should do a voltage bump? I'd have to have to worst 3570k in existence if I can't do 3.8ghz on stock voltage though :p

Well... yeah. XP

But it's worth trying to see if adjusting the voltage slightly helps things - could be that you just didn't get a particularly good chip, as it varies WILDLY as to their overclocking capabilities. (For example, my 3570k is sitting at 4.4GHz, undervolted.)

Ok, I'll give it a go tomorrow, don't have time today sadly. Will get back to you when I'm done with it

So I tested the stability of the overclock using prime95 for an hour and @4ghz with no voltage bump it is fully stable. Also as a side note, I forgot to mention earlier, at times when playing some games (such as Saints Row The 3rd) I get artifacting really bad but mostly it is perfectly fine, it seems completely random. Should I run prime95 and Kombustor (a GPU burner) at the same time to push my PSU? Or do you think it might just be my graphics card issue, I would need some pretty definitive evidence to RMA my GPU though

Ok, so I ran both Kombustor and prime95 at the same time at it worked fine. I then proceeded to play Crysis 3 for 40 minutes. So far no problems for some reason even though I have not changed anything. Fingers crossed it was a one time error (well, one day error)

Yeah, neither can I. I will leave this topic open for a little while so that if I have any more problems I can post it here. If nothing happens in the next week or so I'll close it up. I'm not sure if I hope the problem comes back or not :p

Oh and a quick question which you may or may not know the answer to: My CPU Core #1 (from 0-3) gets about 5 degrees hotter under load than my other cores (Core #1 @65 and the rest are at 60 under full load), is there any way to rectify this? I was thinking there might be a way to get just that one core to clock at a lower speed compared to the others?

I hope it doesn't come back, but definitely let us know if it does.

As for the CPU cores, don't worry about it, that just happens. It comes from the fact that the cores aren't spaced exactly in the same places in the processor, so you're always going to get one or two that run slightly hotter. Those are also likely to be the cores that get the most load - any program that isn't able to take advantage of multiple cores is going to dump itself into the first core it comes across.

However, your temps are just fine, so you don't need to worry about figuring out how to downclock that core or anything like that.

Ok cool, thanks for the help. Will keep you posted on anything that happens this/next week

Yes it just crashes out to windows. Ok, will play a bit more today to see if it will happen again

No it seems fine now (although I am running a lower overclock [4ghz @ stock voltage] now but I'm still happy)
