Format Drive Windows 7

Everytime I connect one of my external hard drives, I get the message that the drive needs to be formatted. I even tried formatting the drive and got an error message that the drive could not be formatted. Anyone have this problem? These are brand new external hard drives. I have another that works fine.

Run diskmgmt.msc, or go to Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Computer Management, then under Storage click Disk Management. See if that tells you anything interesting. Right-mouse click on the left-side of the disk entry in the main window, and see if you have any interesting choices.
