Hey!
I created a topic on the italian tom's hw but no one could help me. I hope someone here can help.

I don't know, few days ago my Pc, after 3 years, had few bsods, few time didn't boot, some "oc failed" and things like that. Then I managed to make it work, but there's a problem.
Since when I bought this pc, 3 years ago, I kept my cpu at 3,4Ghz 162*21 1,25V with RAMs at 1620Mhz Cl9 1.6V and for the last few months at 3,8Ghz. But now, when I try to redo the overclock, bios show only half ram (4Gb/8Gb installed). Windows says that I've got 8Gb installed but only 4 usable and cpuz find all the 4 dimms, same the task manager. If I load the default settings and keep my cpu at 2.8 with RAMs at 1333, then I can use all the 8Gb. I tried some combinations and these are the results:

Default 2.8 + ram 1333 -> 8Gb
3.5 + ram 1600 -> 4Gb
3.5 + ram around 970 -> 8Gb

Tried to remove and reinstall the memories, tried a memtest (passed without errors), tried to use just a pair of modules at time..nothing.

Keep in mind that I'm using the computer right now, I ran some linx and the system seems stable, and it's stable also with the cpu at 3,5Ghz (but half ram).

this is the complete cfg

I think that around monday I'll get my hands on a Corsair Vengeance 2*4Gb Kit so I'll see if something happens.

PS: Sorry for my bad english...you know...italians..:)

Well gpu, stressed as hell with OCCT reach 60°C, cpu under linx around 65°C at 3,4Ghz , around 70°C at 3,8Ghz.
Everything works fine (now) without oc, with oc all seems running smooth but I can only use 4Gb of ram.
The psu maybe is getting tired but I think I never stressed it too much.
It worked great the month I had 2x5870, now with just a 7950 it shouldn't be stressed.

EDIT: Ah, the day all this began, I changed my desk. I moved my PC in another place and it's been unplugged for like 1h. Then it started doing these things.

These are common symptoms associated with overclocking over long periods of time. Components will wear out faster. My suspicion is that part of your IMC has gone kaput

Well I know that oc ruin components and I know there's something broken. Now I...ehm..we...have to find what :)
If the cpu is going to die I can find another processor with lga1156, maybe a second hand 875k. If the problem are the ram..well..new modules incoming. If it's the mobo...I'll probabily change most of my pc components

If you think that it may be the memory, try swapping the existing modules around.

The problem is that I've already done it. I'm waiting monday to get the vengeance.
And actually..I'm hoping that rams are broken, and not something else :(
Any other idea?

Your problem is more than likely that your IMC is beginning to degrade, raise your VCCIO voltage (might be called vIMC on your board) 1.35 max for lynnfield cpu's, if that doesn't work by itself you can raise your dimm voltage to 1.65.

Yep, it's Imc...I did it but ...nothing, still the same

I've got ubuntu 12.10 on dualboot :) ....let's see...total 3952mb....

It's 64 bit. And yeah, when I'm at default clock Ubuntu sees all the 8Gb, as windows or the bios

Well. I'll test the new dimms next week and probabily change most of my components this summer, I hope it will resist few more months..
Anyway..so...cpu and/or mobo are faulty/gonna die. How can I find out which piece actually broken? I'm probably going to sell the working components, then I have to know which is gone :)

You can use a multimeter to check if it's related to power draw, I remember hearing something about Nehalems dropping memory channels from the heatsink being too tight so you might want to loosen it up just a bit and see of that works. Raise you system agent voltage to about the same as your imc voltage Intel recommends this for overclocking.

Ok I tried, @3,5Ghz 160*22 1,216V with memory @1280Mhz I see and I can use all the 8Gb. Ran for 10 minutes linx and everything seems stable. Peak temp 52°C...
Then, with the same settings, I set memory @1600Mhz and nothing..4Gb gone :(

I never tried to touch it couse... I remeber that NB is embedded into the Cpu. I don't even think I can change its voltage. Anyway, all voltages are on Auto except cpu (1,22V) and memory (1,6V).

I don't have a multimeter.
I also read about heatsinks too tight, but I never moved my Noctua for like 3 years, and problem began few days ago. Anyway I already tried to move it a bit, nothing changed. Maybe I can try to loose it up but I don't realize why it would couse problems only when the ram is above ~1300Mhz.
Now I'll check for imc voltage...I never changed it and everything worked fine but I'll give I try right now
EDIT: All right, imc is at 1,21V, that's is fine up to 3,6 - 3,8Ghz. I tried to raise it at 1,35V, as hdeezie80 2 days ago, but didn't work

So, that's the situation right now: I can't go above ~1333Mhz without lose half memory.

Looks to me like your IMC is degraded. This is not surprising.

The Nehalem processors only have native support for DDR3-1333, so running memory at DDR3-1600 requires overclocking the IMC. Furthermore, the IMC on the Nehalem processors is known to be somewhat flaky compared to the much beefier IMC on Sandybridge.

Really? I didn't know this! Just 1333Mhz :\ So why nearly all PCs with Nehalem processors has got ram at 1600Mhz and still running fine after years? Have I got an unlucky cpu? :( I don't think 3,4Ghz is a huge overclock, neither 3,8 actually..with turbo boost at default settings the i7 860 reaches like 3.1Ghz.
Anyway, we probably found the problem :) Well, now I'll see if it's better buy and second hand 1156 processor or wait some time and buy a new platform (probably 3770K + P8Z77V Pro).
Thank you guys

PS: Is there any possibility to reach 1600Mhz with the 2 dimms I'll get next week, instead of the current 4 modules?

Most Nehalem processors can hit DDR3-1600 without much issue as long as the power delivery to the IMC and the DIMMs is stable. There are a few lemons in every batch though, you may be one of the unlucky ones. If the DIMM voltage is too high, it can cause damage to the IMC as well. SandyBridge 2000 series desktop processors are only rated to DDR3-1333 as well, but many of the quad core mobile processors are cut from the same silicon and rated at DDR3-1600, thus most Sandy Bridge processors can hit DDR3-1600 without issue.

Yeah you can check out specs for every CPU @ just search your CPU on google followed by ARK (intels database). But You would be better off buying a newer platform. Ivybridge CPU's can run 2400 mhz + ram no problem. Plus overclocking is a lot easier and safer on sandy/ivy bridge since its all done through a multiplier.

Well, thanks so much guys :) Mystery solved.
I'll buy a new a new platform asap, as I said probably 3770K + P8Z77-V Pro or Deluxe
