I have read all of the other threads/posts but I don't believe that I have gotten a useful answer to my issue.

I got my external hard drive years ago now (250GB if I remember correctly, I haven't been able to properly use this hard drive for a year or so now) and it always used to work no problem (key word: used to). I've looked and tested things that people have said on different forums, but nothing seems to be working as far as that goes.

So this computer says it is an "Unknown Device" while I have another computer that will read the hard drive just fine (So I have come to the conclusion that it is not a hardware issue) All of the USB ports work fine ie. plug anything else into the port and it works the way it should.

I am running windows XP on both computers, but the only difference that I can think of is that one has been updated and the other hasn't. (so the one that is just basically a fresh install still reads the hard drive without any problems at all)

Though I do have another computer that is running Vista that as well will not recognize the drive - which also is up-to-date with its updates

I will also mention that with the computer that will recognize the disk still I managed to back up the information to another drive and then format the disk (thinking that maybe it was a disk error why the other computers could not read the disk) but this did nothing as far as being able to access the disk.

Running virus scans, everything seems to be clean and no viruses/spyware/worms etc etc

So basically I think I am running out of options here other than to format my computer (which would just be a pain in the butt to me) and I don't feel the need to call either Microsoft or LaCie for assistance and waste hours of time for a useless answer, which I'm sure anyone technically inclined would agree with.

I know it is a bit lengthy but I figure with having the different variables to work off of that possibly someone will have a more precise answer and if you can actually fix this problem somehow. Without the need of a useless conversation with support from either manufacturer ... lol

Thanks,

Seiko
