So my brother's i7 930 has died and I was wondering what a good replacement for it would be, he does heavy photoshop and rendering work. I was looking at the i7 3770k and the i5 3570k and I know photoshop takes advantage of hyper threading but the i7 is quite pricey compared to the i5. So any opinions on a good replacement, not necessarily the ones I've mentioned? And yes I do know they rest of the system has to be upgraded.

Maybe a used LGA1366 CPU like maybe the 960. I5 would be a step backwards so the options really are 3770K or LGA2011 3820

Erm... what? An i5-3570k would be a significant upgrade. Yes, a 3770k is an even better option, but the OP can't really afford it.

OP, the i7-930 is a quad core with hyperthreading. Now, the i5-3570k is a quad core without hyperthreading, but it's SIGNIFICANTLY faster, which means on the whole it's a decent upgrade. Just grab that and a z77 motherboard, keep the same ram and other components, and you're golden.

Depends if you want to overclock your computer, for example the i7 3770k is price BUT its unlocked meaning it will offer beter performance if OC...The i7 3770 is a bit cheaper and will offer the exact same performance as the i7 3770k (IF NOT OC)

To be honest you should get the i7 3770 unless you want to overclock your mashine, keep in mind Overclocked machines tend to heat quicker and use more electricity than a machine whitout being overclocked. Therefore Overclocked machines are recommend to people that play loads of games and want the fastest FPS and other things.

Will overclock help on redering?
- yes, but personaly i do not think its worth it...Simply save some money, get the i7 3770, dont over clock your machine and have good overall performance

PS: Keep in mind you have a LGA 1366! Check that you are buying the right procesor for the right socket! Therefore in order to get a 3rd Gen Processor you might need a new Motherboard

I5 would be a great upgrade for gaming but for Photoshop and rendering that will benefit from the hyper threading?

Yeah I think I'll just recommend he gets the 3770k since its looking like the best option even if it is a bit pricey. At least with the K version I can overclock it and have a bit more future proofing on it.

Hyperthreading gives about a 25-50% increase in rendering speeds. So consider the i7-930, which has hyperthreading, but only runs at 2.8GHz on old technology, and then consider an i5-3570k, which doesn't have hyperthreading, but could EXTREMELY easily be overclocked to 4.2 GHz and which runs SIGNIFICANTLY faster, core-for-core.

That's why I recommend the i5, because the OP was saying that the i7 was a little too pricey. If they can afford the i7, then by all means go for it, but the i5 is still going to be a good upgrade.
