Hey guys, new here. Need a little help with setting up a Crucial m4 512GB 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive SATA 6Gb/s (I got it with the data transfer cable and software - Apricorn): I'm having trouble figuring out how to install windows 7 in it - I'm reading that cloning might not be the best option, then again I would be cloning from an ssd to an ssd, not sure if that's the same as hdd to ssd - I also need help with transferring the files from my old ssd to the new one.

I have the HP Pavilion dv6t-7000 Quad Edition Entertainment Notebook PC, if that helps.

Can anyone give me some info here? Having a hard time piecing everything together.

Here is my setup:

HP Pavilion dv6t-7000 Quad Edition Entertainment Notebook PC
• Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
• 3rd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3610QM Processor (2.3 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache)
• NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) GT 650M Graphics with 2GB GDDR5 memory [HDMI, VGA]
• 8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
• Microsoft(R) Office Starter: reduced-functionality Word/Excel(R) only, No PowerPoint(R)/Outlook(R)
• 160GB (Solid State Drive Flash Module)
• NO mSSD Hard Drive Acceleration Cache
• System Recovery DVD with Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
• No additional security software
• 50% off 6 cell + 9 cell Lithium Ion Battery
• 15.6-inch diagonal Full HD Anti-glare LED-backlit Display (1920 x 1080)
• Blu-ray player & SuperMulti DVD burner
• HP TrueVision HD Webcam
• Intel 802.11b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth(R)
• Backlit Keyboard with numeric keypad

I've been trying to figure out how to clean install, but I'm confused on the BIOS portion. How do you get on the BIOS? How do you change whatever that needs to be changed to AHCI? And after I unplug my old ssd and place in the new one and install win7, I'm supposed to plug the old device back? This is for file transferring, right? I'm assuming that the new ssd needs to be plugged in as well, so can I just use a usb cord (from transfer kit) to connect the old ssd to my computer, while the new ssd is still where it needs to be?

Any help? I think what I got on was the BIOS, but I didn't see an option to change anything to AHCI, there just wasn't much that it would allow me to change anyways. Considering that I was already using an ssd, I decided to skip that portion and go straight to the windows installation. I got a bootable usb with win7 64, did everything, but...the new SSD has no drivers, no internet connection. I'm guessing this is where I need to file transfer right? Could I, instead of keeping the new ssd in my laptop as I planned, place back the old ssd and use the transfer kit on my new ssd to create a system image, which I assume would just copy over all 148gb of driver data to the new ssd with no problems, right?

I'm not saying that cloning is the best way to go but I have done it with a couple of laptops and have had no issues. I have an older HP Pavilion and this evening I cloned one SSD to another SSD and then switched the drives. The laptop booted as it should without any problems. If you decide to go this route then I would suggest you put the old SSD drive back in the computer, install the data migration/cloning software, connect the new drive via the USB cable, and lastly run the cloning software. Switch the drives when the cloning is complete and reboot the computer.

Thanks for the help, but that didn't work out too well. Had to wait 9 hours and 46 mins being stuck on analyzing files at 99%, just to have 768 write errors when the copy was half way through. Maybe I missed something.

Previously, I did complete a clean install, but as I said, there were missing drivers; primarily, the problem was that I couldn't get on the internet to install the missing drivers, so I tried to clone instead. I believe the write errors were on the new ssd, but I wouldn't know if that means anything particular. It could have been a bug of some sort, not anything serious, maybe - at least I hope =|
