There are several versions of the 430CX. The newest one is 80 Plus Bronze certified. It will say for sure on the box. The CX and the VS series are both budget lines. With a low end graphics card like yours they are fine though. That's basically what a budget power supply is designed for.

If you had a local power supply there is no way it was 80 Plus Platinum certified. What make and model was it? It may have said Platinum but I would bet that was a model name not a certification level.

80 Plus, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum are measures of efficiency. They do not measure power supply quality. Higher efficiency models are usually quite good though as you have to use at least decent quality components to actually manufacture a...

Cheap, locally produced power supplies very often can't produce the wattage they are rated at. They also burn up pretty easily. You should never buy junk power supplies because they can also take other parts with them when they die. Buy a quality 350w or up model from Corsair, Seasonic, PC Power and Cooling, XFX, Silverstone, Enermax, OCZ or Antec. It can be hard to find quality units under 400 watts but Antec has a few and the Corsair 430CX is generally quite cheap.

Is there any way to determine if it has spoilt any other parts? I know for a fact that the HDD is not damaged.

Replace the dead unit and hope everything else starts too. You are probably OK but there is always a risk when using a cheap power supply.

Well, I arranged for my friend to loan me his PSU tomorrow to test this out...hope it goes well.

Also, I tried my probably defective PSU on my old system.....it has a 24 pin connector on the motherboard and a 4 pin one near the cpu(not the heat sink)
My PSU has a 24 pin and a 8 pin ....i only connected the 24 pin...but I got no reaction.

It would not do anything without CPU power. Most 8 pin CPU connectors can be split into 2 x 4 pin connectors.

Yes. A power supply has multiple rails that supply voltage to different components. Only one of them may be blown.

Well, my warranty is over. So looks like I have to buy a new one. I have a question, in Corsair series Which should I buy?
The VS450, VS550 or the CX430 that you recommended. I fail to see the difference, other than the wattage.
The VS550 costs 2800 INR whereas the CX430 costs 2600.

The CX series is 80 Plus Bronze certified while the VS series is not. Also the CX series is available worldwide while the VS series is pretty much Asia only I believe. Both are decent, budget units. The 430 is fine for your system up to an HD 7850. The 550 is fine up to the highest end GTX 680/HD 7970 level cards.

So future upgrades aside, the matter that strikes is the certification. Is it that important? My old PSU was "apparently platinum certified" but that didn't stop it from dying. Also, some online reviews say that the VS series is cheap and to avoid it.
I know that even when I upgrade my Graphics Card it wont be to that level, so CX430 is enough.
Is the Corsair CX430 Bronze certified for sure? Some reviews are a bit flaky about that, specially those grumbling about it replacing the CX400.
I will be buying the unit today or tomorrow so I need to make a quick decision. I boils down to CX430 vs. the VS550. I can go for the CX500 V2 if I strain my budget. How will the CX500 V2 be in terms of future upgrades?
Also, the CX430 that we are talking about, is it a V2 as well?
Whats the difference and/or significance?

It was some company called MDS. I know it was local because the instructions on the thing itself were written in incorrect english.
My usage is mainly gaming and I download a lot of stuff online. So my computer is often on for hours on end.
By the end of the year i want to upgrade my graphics card to something that won't bottleneck my CPU so much.
Keeping that in mind, and the fact that I will be installing a CPU cooler(after removing the stock heatsink) and a new HDD, should I go for the CX430 or the CX500 V2. I could not find it specifically that the CX430 available here is the new certified one or not. But i could find a CX500 V2 which is certified as per the Corsair website.
If I put the CX500 V2, up to what limit can I input a new GPU?

I got the Corsair VS550 and its awesome!
Turns out that my PSU took my motherboard with it, I think, as well as the power button.
So i disconnected the power switch connector and shorted the 2 pins with a screw driver to start it.
I get the Motherboard green light and the red RAM light.
Thats it. Nothing else.
The heatsink and the case fans spin, but no POST. Nothing on my display either.
I tried my i7 on another system to make sure, and it works, as does my graphics card.
I will try reseating the ram in a different slot and using a different stick too later on.
So it appears to me, that by the process of elimination something is wrong with the motherboard.
Any advice, suggestions??

All you can do is replace it if it's dead. Consider it a lesson learned. Never buy a cheap no name power supply.

I will be taking the motherboard to the ASUS service centre tomorrow, considering that it is in warranty period.
But is there nothing I can do to get it working short of replacing or getting it reapaired by a service centre?

Probably not. The warranty may not cover it either since another part caused the failure. You may get lucky though. I would not mention the power supply failing. A warranty generally only covers a part failing on it's own, not damage cause by another part.

I lucked out!!
Motherboard is fine, a few contact pins of the processor and ram were twisted, they fixed it up in a jiffy.
I got permission from home for a better cabinet, as my current one is another local company called Zebronics Bijli.

http://www.zebronics.com/products/cabinet-gaming/bijli

The front panel and the LED's and the start/restart switches are spoilt.
Any suggestions for a good cabinet?
I want one with bottom PSU mounting for the VS550.
