I've got myself a lovely new laptop for my gaming/university needs and it is pretty amazing but I'm going to be working on my big project for the end of this semester which involves a lot of 3D modeling/rendering and would like some RAM advice so I don't screw up my laptop.

Basically this laptop came with 2x4gb of ram it stated 8GB DDR3 but is 800mhz DDR3??? Otherwise I will contacting saveonlaptops, despite their amazing service that is blatant lie
Made by Nanya Technology if that's helpful at all, these are stock RAM ofc.

My plan is to upgrade the original RAM if need be as I'm not sure it's 1600mhz to either of the 2 links below, laptop has 4 slots but not sure if it's better to get 4x4gb (not sure if it's cheaper) or 2x8gb..

or

My apologies for being a bit stupid here but I have just started to become interested in PC gaming/technology and you have to start somewhere :)
Can anyone provide some information on what to do, shall I scrap the stock ram and just buy 16gb from the same manufacturer or is mixing RAM a bad idea
Thanks!

I'd go with whatevers cheapest. Stickers don't matter, ram doesn't get hot, at all. A ram heatsink is mostly for looks, or if you are overclocking them crazy high. The amount of extra pressure ram puts on the CPU is completely irrelevant, you might see it mentioned in extreme overclocking where the memory controller can't handle overclocking 4 DIMMs to 2400+ or something insane like that. For any type of normal overclocking its not important.

So if you can find 4x4gb for cheaper, grab that. Just to stem anyone saying that with 2x8 you can upgrade to 4x8... Nope, well not with windows home premium and probably not that laptop anyhow. So its just a matter of cost really.
Ah we get this question alot, basically what CPU-z does is it takes the ram speed before DDR does its thing. (DDR = Double Data Rate) so whatever speed you are getting in CPU-z is half what it is in reality. 800mhz x 2 = 1600.

I would probably buy one pair of the kingston ram and try it out alongside your current ram just to see if it worked. If not you can always buy another pair. Though I won't lie, there is a very small chance that 2 pairs of the same ram MIGHT not work together.... Though I've never encountered it and am only going off of people reporting it as a problem. Haven't heard much of it lately.

My apologies if this has been asked a lot, but thanks for clearing that up!

I'm just worried about mixing stock ram and hyperx ram, although similar, would it just be better to pay extra for 16gb of same RAM to avoid the risk of any damage?

Decided to get rid of stock RAM and replace with 2x8gb, heard 4x4 puts more pressure on cpu and just easier to have 2 sticks.

Can't decide between:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingston-KHX16S9P1K2-16-1600MHz-Non-ECC/dp/B008H7IGGI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1364989151&sr=8-2#productDetails

or

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-CMXS16GX3M2A1600C10-Vengeance-Performance-So-Dimm/dp/B0076W9Q5A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1364989692&sr=8-1

Kingston HyperX Pnp is £20 more but is a CL9 and doesn't have a pointless sticker on it which would be an issue with any heat on the ram..

Ok thanks, Mouse. You've been really helpful and informative :)

I'll be going with 4x4 Hyper X PnP KHX1600C9S3P1K2/8Gas it's only £95, it's a latency category down from Corsair aswel which is good.
