My cpu fan is not working, it will spin for a while, sometimes hours at a time and then stop spinning randomly. Also when I look at it and it's not spinning it does like a quarter of a spin ever few seconds like it's trying to spin.

I need help don't know if it's a fan issue or cpu issue, I'm new to the computer scene but i'll do anything I can to fix it.

thank you for your time.

Generally this would not be a CPU issue but more of a fan or heatsink issue if its an issue at all.

First though, a few questions:

1. Is this a homebuilt system or a pre-purchased system?
2. Do you know the temps of your CPU?
3. If you haven't been monitoring the temps of your CPU, you should install SpeedFan and let us know what the temps look like under load and under idle.

It's possible your fan is just shutting off because the chip is cool and doesn't need the extra cooling from the fan's airflow. It's also possible there's a real problem. Can you let us know the components in your system if its a homebuilt or the model number of your system if it's a pre-built one?

Best,
Ryan

It's a homebuilt system, my father built it 3-4 years, to be honest don't know if the parts he got were even new parts...

I do have a program that monitors my temp and fan speed, it's not turning off cause it's cool, temperatures will go as high as 60-70 degrees Celsius and I just shut off my computer on my own cause I'm afraid of damaging the computer.

when the fan does spin the temps are around 44-47 degrees, but like I mentioned sometimes it will randomly shut off and I'll see the temps go up real high and half the time it'll start spinning again and the other half it just doesn't and I'll shut off my computer.

The highest it's gotten cause I wasn't looking at it for a few minutes was 80 degrees.

Its happening more frequent now too, before it would run 90% of the time and the other times it will stop spinning but now it seems like the opposite, it only spins for 20% of the time. And when it's not spinning it does like a partial spin almost like 25% of a total 360 degree spin and stop.

Before I had what I think was called Q-Fan in my bios and that slows down the fan if it's cold but I turned that off so the fan can run all the time at full speed and still no change....

Also forgot to mention, it's an Asus motherboard, amd quad-core 9750 processor

Then I would say you need a new heatsink/fan but we need to know more about your system itself to give you some recommendations.

What's your motherboard/cpu?
