Something in my computer is holding me back

I get low frames per second in games that i probably shouldn't given what i have seen in videos of people playing the game with the same hardware i have, mainly Assassins creed 3, Crysis 3 and saints row 2.
All of the games i struggle to get 60 fps on minimum graphical quality on 1280x720.
Bios and video drivers are as up to date as they can be.
I am grateful for any advice you can offer

My system
OS: Windows 7 home premium 64 bit
Motherboard: Gigabyte M68MT-S2
GPU: XFX core Radeon HD 7850 2GB DDR3
CPU: AMD FX 4100
Hard drive: Seagate ST2000DM001-9yn164
RAM: PSD34G13332 4GB x2

I can't speak about the PC version of AC3, but Crysis 3 is ridiculously CPU/GPU intensive.

Do you have anti-aliasing off? If you haven't turned that off you might try it.

Just so you know...the high end CPUs out there paired with HD 7950 only get into the high 50s in terms of FPS on medium settings (with AA on) in Crysis 3...unless you OC...

Acceptable frame rates fall in the ~40-50 range, and you may need more GPU to run it better. It was designed to take full advantage of the HD 7970...so something to think about.

Also, your RAM is a tad on the slow side...but that won't make a big difference in performance...you'll only gain something like 3% better FPS by going to DDR3-1600

I dont have anti-aliasing on, every thing except resolution is at minimum

You can upgrade CPU or GPU, I would recommend GPU... about $200-250 should get you a nice HD 7950 that will run those games much better.

Is it really that better than the 7850?

If the HD 7950 can only get 50-60 FPS at medium settings, your 7850 won't get there on the same settings.

If frame rates and settings are super important to you, that's the better option.

It does seem like you should get better performance than you are running 720p at minimum quality settings. Are there any other tasks going on in the background? Do you have enough HDD space? No viruses or driver conflicts?

I have 1.12 TB of free space and I do not think that there are any conflicts

Exactly, if the HD 7950 runs it at similar frame rates on higher settings with AA on, you're not going to be able to get those frame rates on your current GPU at the same settings. So if you're seeing 50 FPS on low settings with no AA, then that falls inline with what I would expect, given the hardware limitations and the absolutely insane intensity of Crysis 3 on a PC in general.

Thank you for your help but at this point upgrade is not an option for me so i will just have to endure 25fps.

Before you dump money on an equal class of card look at this...

http://www.hwcompare.com/13303/geforce-gtx-660-vs-radeon-hd-7850/

The GTX 660 is not actually an improvement over your 7850. Though if you went to a Tahiti based 7870, you would likely see a performance increase that would be worth looking into:

http://www.hwcompare.com/13302/geforce-gtx-660-vs-radeon-hd-7870/

See those results?

Look for a Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 XT or if you can find one reasonable a Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 GHz edition. Those 2 will be tahiti based, and will be a substantial improvement, almost as much as the HD 7950 would be...

Well after looking at the usage of CPU and GPU in crysis 3 my GPU barely goes over 50% while all four of my CPU cores are an minimum 95%.

So does know a good AMD3 or AMD3+ CPU for gaming?

FX8350...you will be super happy with it. It also does sound like based on your information that your CPU is a bottleneck at this point.

I take it that is what you have?
