I just completed my first computer build a couple weeks ago and every thing seems to be in good working order, except for the USB 3.0 ports.

Hardware: I have an Antec One case with front panel USB ports plugged into the header of the motherboard and an Asrock FM2A85x Extreme6 motherboard with 4 USB 3.0 ports on the rear I/O.

First thing, the USB 3.0 plug on my case for the front panel ports was a 20 pin plug, but my motherboard only had a 19 pin header. i was told this shouldn't be a problem so i proceeded to purchase them anyway. I was able to plug it in just fine, though it feels a little loose. The ports have power, i was able to confirm this a with a USB fan, but i can't transfer data through them. I first tested it with a thumb drive and it was never detected. then i did the same thing with a USB headset, same thing.

On the rear I/O i'm having the same problems, except for my Logitech mouse and keyboard. I have them plugged into the two 3.0 ports next to my PS/2 port and they work just fine but every thing else that i plug into them doesn't work. So as of right now i only have the two USB 2.0 ports on my I/O to work with.

I went to Asrock's website and found the updated ASMedia USB 3.0 driver under my motherboards download section. I downloaded it and followed the prompts in the install manager and then restarted the computer, but my ports still wont work. Under my device manager i have three devices under the 'other' section that don't have detected drivers, they are the "SM bus controller" and two separate "(USB) controllers". After finding that i restarted my driver installer and chose the repair option to re install them. When that didn't work I tried using the automatically search for drivers function with no luck. Then i tried to manually update them from my programs folder after the install but when i click on the drivers folder and click next it says they can not be found. There were no other USB drivers on the website.

Iv'e done everything that i can think of doing except updating my BIOS. Which i don't want to do unless its necessary.

One last thing to add is that all these devices are USB 2.0, but i was told that the 3.0 ports would be backwards compatible, is that true?

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read through everything.

I checked the settings in BIOS and I have the USB 2.0 controller, A85x USB 3.0 controller, Legacy USB support, and Legacy USB 3.0 support all enabled.

380,
Did you find a solution? I'm having the same problem with ASUS P8Z77-V, Intel Core i5-3570K, Win 7 Pro.
I was looking through forums trying to find a solution and came across your post, that seems to be the most recent, others are dated last year...
Slava.

No, I ended up using a USB 3.0 to 2.0 adapter that came with my motherboard and plugged my front USB ports into a 2.0 header. Now they work, just not as 3.0.
