I am trying to build a touch screen tablet running one application at all times nothing else. I want it to be wifi compatible and be able to update. So my question is what components would I need to build such a thing? Motherboard, ram, hard drive, wifi adapter??

Solution
Actually this is pretty easy to answer basically look at any of the PC build request here on the forum or the budget build articles then add a touch screen monitor plus wifi adaptor and there you go for hardware. The next step would be to select an OS that runs your application and has drivers for the hardware you selected (though you may want this to be the first step) and see if you can get it too run it at all times with updates. Once you have solved those problem the next step be to try to shrink all hardware into a tablet size device good luck with that.

A bankbook running to billions, a research and development team running to thousands, manufacturing facilties thousands of times cleaner than hospital operating theatres and a few millions plebs willing to buy the end product and share the production costs.

We don't build our own tablets, we buy them.

If you asked us how to build a touchscreen pc we'd be able to help you. We could show the benefit on certain parts over others, we could steer you to a better and/or cheaper system. We certainly help a lot of people debug and troubleshoot their systems.

Tablets are on a completely different level. These things are highly integrated, extremely compact and only available as finished products. The components within a tablet are of the same type as those of a pc, they're simply not available to Joe public (including me).

And, no, I wouldn't even know whwere to find spares for existing tablets, which is the closest you'll get to building your own.

ok well let me ask you guys something else. the app i want running is similar to the reminder widget on the iphone, so you can put a reminder, the reminder date and an alarm to remind you, but this is all that you will be able to do on the screen. so would this be considered a tablet, tablet pc, kiosk or what?

I don't know. I do know that most, if not all, tablets, apple touch products and smart phones will have a calender or reminder app built-in that also lets you do other things, like make phone calls, surf the internet, listen to music, and a tohusand and one other things, all while you're waiting to be reminded.
