I have an old Sony Vaoi. It doesn't work with the monitor it came with. I want to take some of the contents of the hard drive of the Sony and transfer it to my HP laptop. How can I do this without being able to see the files? I'm a novice at thes type of things. Thanks in advance.

One option would be to acquire an external USB enclosure for the Vaio drive and connect it to the laptop that way. Something like one of these

Another would be to take the drive and fit it into a friend's machine and then burn a CD/DVD with the files you want from there.

Connect your desktop to a monitor of your friend's or family member's and get a flashdrive, and copy and paste the files to the flash drive, then use the flash drive to copy and paste those files onto the laptop.

Good luck :)
