I want to upgrade my PC that is a few years old so that it can handle a Crysis 3 or BioShock Infinite on decent graphic settings. Down the road a little I will replace the MB/CPU/memory, etc but for now I am interested in replacing my GPU with a EVGA GTX 660.

MB:GIGABYTE GA-G41M-ES2H (PCI-e I think 1.0)
Intel Quad core Q9550 @2.83
EVGA GTS 250 1 GB
2 GB DDR2
700 watt PSU

My understanding is the GPU's 3.0 PCI will work with the MB's 1.0... Is that true? Also, I realize there will be some bottle-necking but would this new GPU still be a decent upgrade with a noticeable difference?

Thanks!

Yeeeeahhh ..... ummm ... so here's the deal.

That's a first generation PCI-E slot running at x4 ... basically your PCI-E slot is running at the lowest that a PCI-E slot can go.

Will you notice a difference? Maybe
Is it going to take a major overhaul for you to see good results? Yeah

I don't think you're looking at Crysis 3 or Bioshock Infinite on decent settings, even with the 660. Everything in that setup is bottlenecking.

Anything above HD7770 will be severely bottlenecked by The CPU
Advise: don't waste money on the GTX660 in that system
Also you will need to add 2GB more memory and 64Bit operating system if possible to utilize full 4GB
Thanks

Dang I was hoping I could cheat the impending overhaul but the consensus is no... I suppose I knew it was coming. I appreciate the advice though! Id rather learn it on the forums then after I spent the cash.

Side note to imomun - I do have 4GB memory in my system... Just a typo/lapse in thought. Good catch though
