which method is best, spread or dot? is it just personal preference, and are different brands significantly better, was planning on buying antec formula nano 7, but noticed the Coolermaster Hyper 412S i am planning on buying comes with some coolermaster paste, do you apply paste to both the cpu and the cooler or just place on the cpu then mount the cooler?

many thanks

Just apply it on the cpu and then press your fan down. I prefer the dot method, it seems to work most efficiently for me...but that is largely preference.

You only need to put the paste on the CPU side, and putting a little dot is fin.e since the pressure applied by the cooler will spread it once you install the fan. Using the paste that comes with the cooler should be fine

and it isn't likely to leak over the edge and damage the weaker parts of the mobo or cpu?

You're talking about something on the order of pea sized in the very center of the chip, it won't spread that far...but a nice even thin layer is what you're shooting for.
