Is the GTX Titan overkill for a 1920x1080 TV

Hello,

After being a console gamer for many years i have decided to switch to PC.
I need to upgrade my Graphics card to run current games and MAX/ULTRA settings with all the fancy mods etc.

I decided as i am upgrading or rebuilding i might aswell invest in the "latest and greatest" To last me for a long time.

The reason i am only playing at 1920x1080 is because i have 2x Thunderbolt Displays on my desk hooked up to my mac which i use for work, so i have no desk space for more monitors etc. Another reason is i love my current Console setup, i have a lovely high end surround sound setup and a very comfy beanbag! And i don't think i would want to swap this anyway to sit at a desk.

As i will be using a beanbag i will not be able to use a Keyboard/Mouse so i will have to use a xbox controller which is fine as all the new games come with xbox controller support.

Looking at the GTX Titan, is it overkill for this setup? As TVs can only take 60FPS Max?

If it is overkill, as next gen consoles are just around the corner i also want to MAX them games aswell so i would like to leave a lot of freeway for the next gen games,

If i do get a Titan how long will it last me with this setup? And if in a couple of years time i cannot MAX/ULTRA games will getting a second Titan solve the issue?
I have NOT got the money to get two Titans now, i was just looking for an upgrade path.

Its not really overkill because the Titan isn't that powerful. Two 670's in SLI will provide more performance, and at less cost. It will be overkill for now on all but the most demanding of games, difference is it will be more useful in the future than a slower setup. Though don't expect anything you can buy now to be of any use in say 3 years.

Also make sure you have a good enough CPU to go with all of this.

For max ultra with all eye candy on Go GTX690
for 1080p Go with GTX 680 instead if saving matters, Will last you few years.

Coming from console graphics you will probably stay glued to the monitor as PC Graphics are superior even with mid level gaming cards.

Future is very uncertain with PC Gaming world. Every six month something better around the corner.

Be wise since you want 2x 670's get the GTX690 which is a SLI 670s anyways.

I am sure although Nvidia s 7xxx series is due in 2014
The GTX 690 will not get outdated in next few years at least on HD1080p.

Sure a Titan will be enough, but two 670's are less money, and get more FPS. The Titan is basically a 'look how rich I am' card, sure it has its benefits, you can bet it will always perform in games, where-as sometimes SLI runs into issues with certain games, it will also use less power. But its just soooooo expensive for what you get.

Yea I wouldn't buy any hardware with the intent to keep it for 3 years. Thats like using a 480 now, still a relatively quick card but is easily bested by $150 cards of today.

But I am just wondering, but in what cases would a GTX Titan be better than the 690?
Also what are the disadvantages of having 2 GPUs in 1 Card?

Titans are not actually made for gaming, they are a 'do all' card, with CUDA and design mindshare as well. The most powerful single card Nvidia make is the 690, which is two 670s (or 680s, I forget) fused together on one board.

I have just spotted a Problem

By Case is a CM Storm which supports cards up to 10.6"
The GTX Titan is 10.5" so it will fit, but the GTX 690 is 11" so it will not fit.

I was thinking about rebuilding my System, and getting the Scout 2 Advanced Case,
and while i was at it i might aswell get a new CPU and Mobo

CM Storm is a product range, you have a case in that product range. I have a CM Storm Enforcer, so I can tell you that you can detach the higher HDD bays in order to give you more room and easily fit the card in. If you have the Scout or Sniper that may be impossible though.

Also, others haven't mentioned this but, the PS4/nextXbox are less than a year away. Because of the huge push in eye candy and quality on multi-platform games that they will bring with them it's probably a bad idea to buy a hot graphics card now. As soon as they drop and start stressing PC gamers (bearing in mind most of us will want to run them at 3x the quality level of the consoles) Nvidia and AMD will be trying to ram their new offerings down your throat.

Right now, I'm gaming on a system with a 3930k (mainly for work) and a 560ti on a 1080p screen. I have never noticed this card even stutter and I run everything at max, nothing less. My advice is to buy a 660ti, or even 670 and then wait for the next range to drop before you spend the big bucks.

Just take a hack saw to it, not like you will need to occupy all of the hard drive slots anyway.
