So I recently started building a new computer and I tested it alot along the way and everything was working up until the point that I put in the SSD and Optical Drive. After I put those 2 in, the computer would not turn on. The fans would spin for a second then shut down. I have an asus p8z77-v lk, gtx 680, 3.5ghz i7 processor, a 500 gb ssd, and an 850w modular psu. Are the sata ports on the mobo broken? Please help :(

A few things possible here...

1. Your PSU is faulty and is not putting out enough power to run everything in your system. What specific PSU do you have?
2. Your cables are not fully connected and the power is shorting.
3. One of your devices is faulty and is shorting the PSU.

I don't think it'd have to do with the SATA ports on the MOBO, but go ahead and try different ones. Make sure that all of your SATA power cables are plugged into your devices firmly and try again.

Also, is this your first boot? Or do you already have a boot drive?

This is my first boot and everything seems to be plugged in. My psu is a corsair hx850. And I don't think my SSD AND my optical drive could be faulty either. And the computer turns on and everything except for when I put in the SSD or the drive. I also tried unplugging the graphics card and a stick of ram and then trying it but no luck. So I guess it's not a problem with not having enough power. I'm so confused:/

Have you tried it with just the SSD and just the optical drive? It might not be both that are bad, just one or the other.

But still, it is possible that they're both bad, honestly. Bad luck does happen.
