I bought the WD My Passport drive for the sole purpose of transferring my files from my G3 to my G4. My small travel drive (1G) is recognized by the G3 but the files I need to transfer are too large to put on this drive.

My G4 can see the My Passport drive. Why can't my G3 see the My Passport drive?

More about : passport drive

G3? G4? What are these? Are these laptops? Are they both running the same OS? Need more information, please.

Sorry I need to correct my computers. I have a PowerMac G4 using Mac OS 10.2.8 and a PowerMac G5 (using Mac 10.6.8). Both computers are towers, not laptops.

The new passport is configured for windows it seems. Reformat it for Apple in exFat that way it can be used in both OS's

Interesting I was told by the GEEK SQUAD at Best Buy to select MS-DOS (FAT). Does it matter which icon on the left panel I should choose? I have two options:
2 TD WD My Passport
MY Passport

Not sure which one to choose

Sorry, I just realized Mac doesn't support exfat until 10.6.5 so yes fat32 is the correct format for windows & mac compatibility. For just straight Mac you can use the standard hsf+

Sorry, I don't know what hsf+ is? I am a graphic designer that is trying to move files which I probably should have moved along time ago. This passport drive is only going to be used for MAC computers. There are other options to choose from :
Mac OS extended (journaled)
Mac OS extended
Mac OS extended (case-sensitive, journaled)
Mac OS extended (case sensitive)

I have formatted as MS-DOS (FAT) and the drive still can't be seen on the PowerMac G4 which is odd since the computer can read and copy files using my little travel drive. It would take hours to transfer files using the travel drive.

Unfortunately I can't install OS 10.6.8 on the G4 because it won't be able to handle it. At this point do you think it is a lost cause and I should take the computer to Apple to see if they can get the info off the computer? Or do you think one of the options listed above might work?
