I have a inspiron 15r and was wondering if i could upgrade it somehow to be able to play the newest games like crysis 3 or something
here are some specs
i7 intel core processor
8 gb ram
intel 4000 graphics card
1tb hard drive space
windows 8
dont know what else to put but i when i play games like batman akc or sleeping dogs the laptop starts blowing out hot air anyone have any ideas to help cool it down?
would an external graphics card work from what i understand the processor is high end and i have enough ram

One way is to crack open the laptop, clean of the heatsink, and replace the thermal paste, then use high-end thermalpaste like Arctic Silver 5 to replace the stock compund.

The only upgrades for an OEM laptop like the 15r are CPU, RAM, and HardDrive

The GPU is largely responsible for not being able to play the latest games. You cannot upgrade that, unfortunately. What you should do is buy a desktop if you really want to play games.
As for cooling the laptop, you can look into any sort of laptop cooler. This is placed underneath the notebook, where a fan blows into the computer.

To me the main problem that needs to be fixed is the graphics. The cpu is sound but the 4000 gpu will not do well for the type of game you mentioned unless you don't mind turning off every graphic enhancement so you can have FPS near a playable level. Can you put a discrete video card in that what ever it is you got?
If not you should have went with AMD's newest APU config but that sounds too late as you already have the Intel setup. It's getting to be a confusing world and I still am a solid home PC user that I can upgrade if needed and play on a huge screen. I do not like the way computers are going and fail to understand why anyone would want anything different for games.
the mobile market has it's place in business and the list of other small devices are out there selling but for what overall good they are is a real crazy.
Every new product that has been trying to do away with game pc's has caused the quality of the games to tank, they mix into the PC level market with Xbox's. ...ect and people are complaining about the games but continue to support the reason why they are helping kill the game quality at the same time and it always leads back to the obvious that people are incred. stupid and have always found ways to cut their own foot off as a example. I'm no different, I've done stupid things in my life but at least when it comes to computers I haven't but I've learned the mistakes long ago so it's that much easier to see others doing it.
It's a good laugh. You bought a setup that is not made to play games worth a $%^( and are now asking for help when you should have made use of the information that is spread all over the internet for years. Tough luck... sorry to see though..

Dude, you're not helping, and you just wasted your time answering anything but relevance.

actually a cheap apu notebook would have sufficed as they have better gpu
it is actually the fault of companies like dell etc and their sellers which sell these i7 + crap integrated graphics as gaming laptops

for now you could either play everything on low or just buy a cheap pc with a weak cpu but a strong gpu
as for heating issue i7 do get hot a little

if you can or have any return policy use it and return it to get a laptop with a better gpu

Yeah, you are pretty much screwed with the 4000 video card. Laptops are not upgradable. Sadly most people spend their money in a hurry and then ask for help, only to realize that they made a bad purchase. If only people would do a little research before they buy. Now you are going to be mad at Dell and mad at me for saying so. Right now there are only a few laptops on the market that are OK at playing newer games. Lenovo even offers a laptop with a slot for a second video card to double your power but its expensive.

See if you can return the laptop and put the funds toward something with a decent video card, but if not you are stuck with it.

Just ignore these people.

To answer your question:
As that laptop does not have a removable graphics card (i.e. it is stuck with the integrated graphics HD 4000), you will not be able to play the games smoothly, thus it will not be enjoyable.

You will still be able to play, but I doubt it will fun.

Hope this helps.
