I am looking to replace my current Core 2 Quad workstation. I am currently undecided as to which CPU to go for. Things being as they are I'm looking to keep prices down so the new Piledriver AMD's certainly looks to offer a good deal at its price, but I'm not sure how well these perform in virtualised systems. Host will be running either Debian 6 or openSUSE 12 and VMware Workstation 9.

Well the AMD FX8350's run quite well in linux and have 8 cores that are quite useful for VM's. The Intel for LGA1055 are a somewhat faster but cost more and the i5-3750K and i7-3770K do not support VT-D (Virulized direct I/O) so you would have to use a regular SKU like i5-3750(4 cores no Hyper threading) or i7-3770 (4 cores 8 threads) or jump up to the LGA2011 platform which cost alot more. It really depends on how much you want to spend.
