I have a HTPC setup with a Ceton 4 tuner card and PCI NIC, going to a switch, then to 3 xbox's and a d-link extender. I have had 2 Netgear switches fail on me in the last 4 months. One is an 8 port Pro-safe and the other a 16 port. Both time they work for a month or so, then stop passing data. All the lights are on and data lights are flashing as before, but no internet, and the extenders can't find the MCPC. Has anyone seen this type of failure with Netgear? I hook up an old d-link 5 port hub and it wstarts working again, but there is not enough ports for everything I want and need to piggyback another d-link switch. I am thinking that the switches can't handle all the HD video but that seems doubtfull.
Thoughts?
Thanks.

The Netgear switches should be able to pass that bandwidth without an issue. I have found that switches, routers, etc... need to be rebooted occasionally.

Are you using managed switches?

What device(s) are handling DHCP on your network?

How often does the DHCP lease expire (this would necessitate a reboot of some switches when the DHCP lease runs out)?

I have several switches connected to a router provided by the cable company for internet. The router wants to be the DHCP server (big problems in connectivity with the Time Warner Cable if you don't use it), and they only allow a 72 hour lease on IP addresses. This results in the switches having to be rebooted every 72 hours. I have tried to find a way to extend the lease to never expires or at least 30 days.

The fix is just to unplug the power on the switch, and reboot. Windows 7 handles the lease expiration fine 99% of the time, however, once in a while, two PC's end up with the same IP address, and a reboot is required.

You might also check on the IP V6 in your IP Config....XBox connectivity to WMC is sometimes buggy if it is disabled....and not all routers will provide IPV6 DHCP.

The best solution for your network would probably be a simple unmanaged switch...this switch works really great for me:

I have a D-link router that connects to the cable modem, then was running that to the switch and had all the components connected to the switch as well. The router would be handling the DHCP, but I was not thinking about that since the components were connected to the switch (not a netorking guy, obviously). Will the hub be affected the same way eventually? I do use the router configurations for other PC's so my next step should be to make sure the switch lease to the router is valid? I did not try it, buti thought the switch would work even if the router was unplugged.
Thanks.

My default config for a network like yours would be the Cable Modem ethernet to to the WAN port of your router. Then setup the router to serve DHCP to your network. Then run ethernet from the router to the switches. The switches should be "invisible" to the network (if they are unmanaged), and work like a splitter. Then go ethernet from the switches to devices. The Cable modem will be behind the D-link router, so the PC's should see the cable modem. There should only be one connection from the cable modem to your network.
